I'm going to put my vette away for the winter. This is the first time for me. I am wondering what are the proper points for placement of the jack stands and what are the proper points to jack the car for placement of the stands.:confused

Are you concerned about the tires getting spots on them so you're putting the car on jack stands? If that's the case, you don't have to worry about that; today's tires are much better made than years before.

I just park mine in the garage and fire it up every couple of days. It's worked perfectly fine for the past 14 years!:D

I've been storing my Cars (Corvette/Camaro) for years and never jacked them up. I've never had a problem with the tires. I do make sure to use fuel conditioner and I start the car once a month and let it run for about 1/2 hour. Here in Minnesota, winter storage is not that far away. :(

Mr. Dark,

Are you anywhere nears St. Paul? I have a friend that just moved up there from Chicago this past June and I've already told her about the winter, she's not thrilled or looking forward to it! LOL. Co-worker told me that anything less than a foot of snow in MN is considered a "flurry." LOL!!!

Edmond

I'm about 75 miles northwest of the cities. Winters here can be brutal and they can last from early November until April some years. It seems that we get a stretch of -40 below mornings every January. Winter bites! ;)

Simply go to the search area and type in Winter Storage. Rob has plenty of great information there!:upthumbs You can find this on the "home" page (on the left hand side)

An easier way to get there: Go to Forums.... scroll down to Care & Detailing, go to Robs "Important" thread dated 9/17. It has all the info you will need!

Starting the engine for short periods is a BAD idea. Unless the engine is THOROUGHLY warmed up for a PERIOD of time, you are creating nasty acids in the crankcase. A 30 minute warm up would be the bare minimum. I personally believe that you would be much better served by thoroughly warming up the engine, then changing the oil before storage. Then in the spring warm it up THOROUGHLY and then change it again.

Using inexpensive, albeit SJ rated oil for the winter storage would be okay, then put your favorite premium brand in when you change it in the spring.

Good luck,

I checked the storage tips referenced by ctfoodguy2000 earlier in this post, and this quote is from those tips - "Again, we asked David Scott at GM. "It is always best to start your vehicle once a month if possible." I read somewhere else that this is best because it eliminates the possibility of seals dryout out over time. I agree that it should run at least 1/2 hour to make sure it is fully warmed up. The other advantage to this is that, even though I can't drive the car, I can at least sit in it and run the engine! Vroom! Vroom! ;) ;) ;)
