Strange blinker problem

Two days ago my blinkers stopped working, sometimes. I turned on the directional to make a turn and they worked just fine. I had clicking, and the light indicator worked. The next turn I made no clicking, and no lights.

Then I turned off the car and started it and the directionals worked for a little while again. I tested left, right, left a few times and they worked fine, both clicking and lights. A few minutes later they stopped working again.

Turning the car off and starting it again the fixed the problem again for a few minutes. I'm not sure what triggers the failure. But once they stop working, I have to start and stop the car to get them working again.

Any suggestions what the problem might be?

I caught some of the emails among our local RMCSC non-members on this issue- hopefully, you'll get more useful advice here than "you're low on blinker fluid."

The problem is in diagnosing where the cause might be. Are you, by chance, getting any CODES that may help?

Thanks for the code suggestion. I didn't see any warnings except for tire pressure low. I wasn't worried about that because I don't have tire sensors in the wheels currently on my car, and my runflats with tire sensors are sitting next to my car in the garage. So the tires aren't really low.

Hi, when i got my 1981 6 months ago my right indicater inside did not blink but the tail light and front worked, this was happening for awhile , i think 3 weeks ago it started to work correctly and i forgot about it, my car was sitting for along time and maybe the wiring was screwy!!

Just a thought.......I had a car (non-Vette), that had a similar problem. It turned out to be in the emergency flasher, it was real dirty from not ever being used. I turned them off and on a couple doz times, put some contact cleaner in the switch and the problem went away.
Might be worth a try...........

Yes- C4C5 has talked about the emergency flasher switch sometimes being the culprit.

I've had this problem in two other cars (non-vettes). One turned out to be a dirty bulb socket, the other was an intermittent bulb.

Hi there,
I would definately be looking at the hazard switch in this case.
All exterior lighting for the signals is routed through the switch.
Cycle it a few times to clean the contacts and see if the problem changes.

I downloaded the codes as Patrick suggested. I recieved the following:

C2100 Left Front TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2105 Right Front TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2110 Right Rear TPM Sensor Malfunction
C2115 Left Rear TPM Sensor Malfunction
U1064 Loss of Communications with BCM
U1096 Loss of Communications with IPC

All of the messages were historical (had an H after the number). I'm running a different set of wheels right now, so the runflats with the tire pressure sensors are sitting in the garage next to the car. So I'm sure that is why I have the C21xx messages.

I reset all of the error codes. I also double checked to make sure all the lights are working. I tested the hazard lights a couple of times. Everything seems to be working.

But now it isn't failing anymore. I drove quite a bit all weekend, and I didn't experience the problem again. I'm not sure what I could have done to "fix it". Resetting the codes shouldn't have done it.

I guess if it isn't broke, I shouldn't fix it. I'll watch the codes.

It sounds like you did exactly what Paul suggested. I am glad that it worked.

You'd be surprised what clearing history codes can do. I'm glad everything seems to be properly functioning again- but do watch it, and let us know if the problem comes back.
