strange noise... maybe normal?

My 95 has an odd noise - seems to be coming from the rear, and is only noticeable when I turn it off. Turn the key, engine cuts, then sounds like a motor or whirring noise that cuts a second or two later. It's not the antennae, everything else seems to be running fine (except the low-temperature knock I get when first starting until it gets to about 180, but that goes away pretty quickly). Not sure what this noise is and I've searched everywhere. Is this like the ABS noise noted in other posts or could it be something else? Thanks for the help!

First welcome to the CAC!! You'll find lots of info here and very nice folks.

The ABS self-test is a whirring noise but that happens only when the car is started and begins to move to around 3-6 MPH or so. I wouldn't think that the fuel pump would make that noise as it shuts off as soon as the key is turned off.

The antenna ribbon may be close to failing; the nylon ribbon that moves the antenna may have some pieces gone and the motor may still be running even though the mast has retracted. You could verify this by laying down under the left side below the antenna and have somebody shut the key off (engine doesn't have to be running, just the key at the RUN position and the radio on) and see if you hear anything.

It sounds like your fuel pump activating at start up and powering down when you turn your car off. Try this.... switch the car ON but DON'T start it. Make sure the radio is off so you can hear and it doesn't matter if the windows are up or down. Hear something that sounds like lite whirring of gears? Then it's the fuel pump.

How long should the pump run after shutting of the car? I assume the pump continues to whir until all the fuel in the lines has been returned to the tank.

The fuel pump should shut off the moment you turn the key off. Unless you've got some kind of lazy relay. I would check the antennae 1st.
