My 86 has developed an annoying problem I can't seem to run down. When I'm cruising down the road (constant speed) and the driver's window is down I smell gas - very strong. At idle there is no smell. With the window up there is no smell.
I've replaced all the rubber lines on the gas tank vapor recovery system. I've replaced the vapor canistor.
Fuel pressure is normal and a bleed down check indicates no leaking injectors.
Fuel injectors only have 20k miles on them. Just replaced fuel pump and filter. New gas cap.
Sitting in the driveway, idling, I can't find any sources of a raw gas smell.
Any ideas?

I had the same problem but mine was a rubber line on the gas tank vapor recovery system. Sorry I could'nt help.

I would replace the gasket around the in tank pump area and put sealent on the 10 bolts when reinstalling them.

The next time you smell it, pull over and shut it off, and start sniffing. Smell around the air cleaner inlet. If your fuel pressure regulator is stuck, there will be gas pouring out of your air filter.

Surely a good place to look, if this odor is also new.

I'm going to do this this weekend. When I replaced the fuel pump, I used a new gasket, but didn't put sealer on the bolts. Thanks!

It appears to have worked. I installed a new gasket with gasket sealer and put sealer on the bolts. Nice. Thanks!

i know this post is kind of old, but was wondering what kind of selaer you used? are they all o.k. to use with gasoline?? i am going to be doing the same thing, my 86 fuel sending unit mounting flange is all rusted out and deformed, so i found one from a place in AZ, i have a new gasket and going to put a new fuel pump and wires in since i have no idea how old mine are. was thinking about getting new stainless steel screws too.

the bolts have o rings on every one of the .
replace gas cap o ring and use a wire brush to clean up the rust .
duck tape the hole so no rust goes into fuel tank and you are working with
gas one spark or static electricity from the brush can set off a fire.
