thanks for the info.....
but I'm going to use the propane method first.
if that dont work, then ill just order the shock mount remover, and wait a few days for it then take it off.
I know I'm getting the shock mount bolts now. thanks for the numbers. now I got to get new t/a too, dammmmm. oh well.
if you want it done right, do it right the first time.
all I need now is the money to do it all at once, for everything. or I can just go at it the way I'm doing it now a section at a time, and buy the stuff as I go.....
you know I was wondering why the people at all the auto parts center were looking at me all weird, when I told them what I needed. only like 1 person knew what I was talking about, but he had never seen them anywhere.
thanks again for your help
Dave

Dave, I'm not suprised no one from the places you mentioned has heard of it.

I got mine from a local Corvette Specialty shop here in town. I paid 20 bucks for it cause I was in a hurry at the time. ( I hate waiting for stuff once I get started). Before I purchased mine I planned on getting one from Corvette Central #582414 for 14.95.
It's called a Shock Mount Removal Tool. One size fits all 63-82.

Good luck,
-john

thanks for the info on my reply.....
had a few others respond about it too....
I just need to know where to get one, just in case, but I'm not sure if I will need it after all. allot of people have said to use heat to remove it, and when I couldn't find that tool, I bought the propane burner.....I hate to wait too once I want to do something, but then again, I also want to do it right.
ill post here tomorrow after I remove it, and a few pics too.... if all goes well and it comes off.....
thanks for the help.....

Dave - you shouldn't have any problem getting that out once you got that heated up....you will not need that tool like you said.

Dave

using heat!!!!

hey Dave,
quick question..... now I have never bone this to remove a bolt or nut before, so how do I actually do it.....

I was just going to heat it up till it turned a nice red color, and watch the rubber bushings melt off in the process...... then just bang out the bolt, while it is still a red color.....

is that the way your supposed to do it.....
let me know cause I plan on doing this first thing in the morning.

thanks again
Dave

I just saw one of those shock mount knockers on eBay yesterday. It sold for a little over $6.00 ($10.00 with shipping). I found the appropriate size nut and thread combo at Pep Boys. Cost me all of $1.00

An air chisel/hammer is about the cheapest air tool you can buy. I've seen Campbell/Hausfield units go for around $20 to $25.

I always hate it when something that appears so simple ends up taking days, dollars and several trips to the store in order to get what you need in order to deal with it. It's always the little things that throw my projects way off schedule.

I was lucky, in that mine just popped out with only a couple of taps with a mini sledge. Good luck.

BURGLAR

COOL that's what I thought. got it...
just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing it the wrong way, or something worse off to it. thanks again man for your help.

Thumper

6 bucks huh..... well till yesterday I didn't even know what they were called, but now I'm more into what it is and dose and can make one with the help from the guys here.....That's Cool...

unfortunately, I could not find what I needed here around where I live, and really wanted to get it off yesterday, so I bought a propane torch, to do the job instead, but by the time I could not find what I needed, and got the torch and got home, well hell.... it was almost 9pm and I still had to eat and shower, which is not bad, but I had to be at work this morning by 430am, and I live an hour away from work, so as you can guess, no torching went on last night. but it will be done tomorrow, after I get home.

air hammer tool.....
25 bucks, that's all..... I thought they were more, and I never really needed one till recent.

what psi do you have or recommend for its use??

I know from pervious air tool experiences that not enough psi will do no better than doing it yourself.

I too hate it :mad when something so simple happens to take days to accomplish:hb....I feel you there.....happened to me on the front also with the A-arms, and then the rear with the rear disks, now this.....at this rate the car will be another 30 years old by the time I'm done.....:duh but I'm not going to let that happen. I'm sure I could do this in a year or so. 2 if I'm slow......

posting pics soon of it all, so stay tuned for a new thread when I'm done. plus a few other back ones that I just haven't done too.
thanks for the help
Dave

Look to see if you have map gas or propane. Map gas burns hotter and is usually a yellow tank. You will need to heat the sleeve after the rubber burns away. It is the sleeve that is froze to the shock mount. :)

so just the sleeve is all I should be concerned about....
I have seen that yellow tank somewhere before, but I just got the propane and it is brand new, and not even used yet.... well until a bit, when I get started on it. but I think this will work, if not, its to the parts store for that map gas......
by the way where did you get yours at, or where are some places that they sell it at....
thanks again
Dave

FINALLY!!!!!!!!!
shock mount bolt is out..... :Twist

went to ACE hardware, as I was suggested to do, and I found what I needed......
I made my own shock mount removal tool using a nut and bolt the same size as the shock mount, 5/8 was the size, if I remember correctly.

nut was same size as the castle nut, but a solid one, and the bolt was a 1 1/2" fine thread bolt.

I screwed the nut half way on the shock mount and then screwed in the new bolt on the other half, and gave it a few whacks with a 4 lb. mini sledge, and it came right off.
I didn’t even have to use the propane burner I bought either, but I will keep it just in case.

here it is, check it out.....

notice the shock mount removal tool on the end......

final product.......
now on to the rest of the rear.....
ill keep you all posted
