Out cruising around with the wife the other day, I open the throttle up after a light turns green and by the time I'm in 4th the throttle sticks wide open! After a brief moment of panic, I stomp on the accelerator and it unsticks.

Lets say the wife wasn't amused :D

Besides a good shot of carb cleaner any tips on addressing this?

Have you had the ignition shielding off recently.. Ask me how I know... With the car off see if your throttle lever is getting caught on the shielding.. Dave..

As a matter of fact I did, I'll check it out thanks. Hope your hairy ride had a happy ending ;)

Yep it's a scare to have it stick in any position good thing the cure is just a turn of the key and coast to the shoulder... Dave..

If you're concerned about locking the steering wheel by shutting off the key and the throttle is jammed WOT, hit the brakes. There's more than enough braking power to overcome WOT until you get to the shoulder and then shut 'er down.

Mac that's the great thing about old vettes .... no column lock..

ure it

Always something right.

I would not drive it again until you figure it out.I would check the easey stuff first, anything in side by the carpet. An oversized or incorrect floor matt.

then look at the linkage by the firewall.see if its loose or cocked that it could bind.

then with the air cleaner still on look around that. Have some one sit in the car and floor it (if you do it by the carb manually it may not have the same effect.)

Good luck and be safe, PS dont do it with the car running.

If you find nothing with the car off.I would then start the car and then manually race the motor to see if the motor is twisting up from a bad motor mount.

I had that happen once in a '55 Cad. We found a broken motor mount. It allowed the motor to torque over and jam the throttle linkage.

Did you check to see if the carpet caught the accelerator pedal?

Something simple before you dig real deep.

Thanks, all good tips from everyone.

I haven't had the time to look into it since the infamous event. Hopefully this weekend. I'll check the motor mounts as well. I also noticed in the past that at anything more than 3/4 throttle, I always have to push through the gas pedal with a little more force, kind of like it's sticking. It must be related to the WOT incident.

Any tips on getting the wife back in the passenger seat ? :)

Samething happened to me with my '66 L79 first time I wound it through the gears. The accel rod got hung up on the shielding. Flipped the rod over to the other side of the firewall lever and problem fixed. My wife was with me too.
