Removed the secondary bowl on my brand-new Holley 850 (part of the ZZ-502 premium engine kit) today and :eek

Bowl screws...

No fuel has entered the carb yet, and I'm trying to tell myself that this white powder is normal oxidation which will vanish once gasoline enters the picture, but............. :eek anyone else seen this stuff before?

Comments please.

Brand new?? Something doesn't look right to me; doesn't make sense that it'd oxidize like that while still new. ;shrug

"Hello Holley Customer Service, this is Canada calling again. You wouldn't believe what just happend..."

Brand new? :(

Looking at it again, the bowl screws should never look that bad; a little bit maybe, but never that bad! :nono

I'm thinking I would be screaming (gently) in the ear of whoever supplied that ZZ502 package. You paid how much for it?? :mad

Hey Bob, did you get a chance to see the insides of the engine? I can't remember if the carb and manifold were seperate items that you bolted on, or if they were already attached to the engine, as in "carb-to-pan" complete. :confused

Bob

Are you sure your engine didn't make a little side trip to South America on it's way to Canada after you odered it? maybe it was used to smuggle certain exports from down there or it just partied way too much!
;LOL

My friendly, neighbourhood Chevy dealer. This crate engine came short-block assembled only. Everything else was in boxes.

There is a hint here. The carb-to-intake gasket, the air cleaner wingnut nipple, and the mounting studs and nuts plastic bag were missing from the carb box. The dealership replaced them.

Hmmmm :confused

Must have been some moisture in there or some cleaner that was an oxidizer. My old Holley-in-a-box doesn't have any oxidation on the inside. I doubt you will get anywhere with Holley since it came on the GM engine package but GM Parts should replace it under warranty.

Are you calling OMS this morning? Can you get the service or parts manager stop by the garage to see it first hand as it's only 5 minutes away! Should probably take off the other side to see if it's the same before you call. You can probably tell just from the bolts when you undo them. Lucky in a way that the hose clamp had too little clearance to tighten it resulting in you having to open it up, otherwise you would never have seen this at all. Good luck. See you later.

Carb

Well from looks of it its prob been mounted on engine i have a new
750 DF on mine and it sure dosen't look like that.

67HEAVEN - The metering circuits are very difficult to clean out properly when this much oxidation takes place. The throttle body cleans out OK ; but the metering plate is a bitc---. I woud really try to get a replacment from your supplier.

By the way , you have a really nice project.

I'm pretty sure it's from moisture in the bowl, and it would vanish all right if it were mine. Right back down to the Chevy dealer who supplied it!!!! :mad

Great that you caught it, shouldn't happen, but it does anyway.

Best Wishes :beer

Ok Heaven....That's it...!!! Take that sucker off and march down and go see Mr. Goodwrench and get a new carb. There's no excuse for that carb to look like that out of the box.

When I buy anything I want New..!!! Not Junk.!!! I always open the box in the store before I leave and check inside to make sure I get what I paid for. In your case ,it was kind of hard to do that... but don't even think of cleaning it.

Your obligation was to pay for a new carb...there obligation was to suppy you with a new carb.

Take it:beer back..

The pit crew is standing down for this weekend. As you may have read in other threads, the plan was for "fire-in-the-hole" on Saturday afternoon.

That's not happening now. :(

And, wouldn't you know it, the performance parts specialist that I deal with at the dealership is on holidays until a week Monday. I'll go and talk to someone else there, but they usually just say, "Oh :eek Dave better handle this kind of thing." :eyerole

Oh well. There's always the doors, carpet and seats to install in the interim.

Maybe I'll just buy a Honda.

Just another day-in-the-life of this odyssey. :L

not sure if that's the best idea Bob. If it IS from down south than you got lucky!
LOL
if it's anything else than it's too risky and you have a car to complete.

maybe try it out on an unsuspecting neighbor kid you don't like very much and if there is no bad reaction..........
;LOL ;LOL

well, if you do are you trading in 67Heaven for it?
I wonder how much they will give you on trade for it against a new Accord.
LOL

actually, they better give you 3 Accords, fully loaded, PLUS a fair amount of cash.
:D
