Might be I smell a rat and it is NOT the RAT MOTOR I smell. FWIW I don't know about the white stuff BUT my experience with 2 GM crate motors has not been good. The SB that is in my Vette had core sand in between cylinders on BOTH sides of the block. I cannot imagine trying to solve that cooling problem if I had loaded the heads on and not seen the crud they left in the block.
On my 454 (bought years ago I must admit) one rod bearing cap was on BACKWARDS. They had to have POUNDED it on. Fortunately I took it apart BEFORE I started it. GM stepped right up for a new rod but honestly at these prices I think we have a right to expect better.
I would take that motor apart right down to a bare bolck and CHECK EVERYTHING. Manufacturing today (at least at GM in my opinion) has replaced quality ctrl with "Replace it via the dealer parts dept..... if the customer catches any problems". Sucks big time. They have had rear end and transmission problems for years and from what I read and see they just are not stepping up.
Oh by the way that SB with the core sand. That was the second new GM block. I refused the first one. They have re-cast the SBC to iron blocks for the oil pan dip stick on eather side world we have today. On one side of the first block they sent me there was a 2 x 2 inch cast iron PLATE that had been cast with the engine in the outside of the cylinder block down by the oil pan rail. Had something to do do with the dip stick relief on that side of the block. I squalked at the dealer and they got their TOP MECHANIC (Mr Bestwrench/) to look at the way the piece was sorta cockeyed in the clylinder case wall. His comment "Well a lot of people complain about this area in the casting but this is the worst one I have ever seen. Give him another block...junk this one". I mean to say WTF????? I now have a seasond standard bore 1972 block in storage in case the NEW from GM block has any trouble. I have read LOTS of negative things about rear main bearing seal leaks and other things. Much as I hate to say it I will just junk the block rather than do any machining / modifications on it if I have trouble.
