Good morning folks. This is my first question to those who participate in the forum on a regular basis. I have been a member for several years and really enjoy the exchange of info and opinions from this forum. My question:

This morning while running for coffee in my 96 Auto Coupe with about 55,000 miles, I see SYS flashing next to my gas guage. Checked the manual and it says that it is an electrical issue. Anyone know what the problem might be? I am thinking a battery going bad or alternator going bad. I have noticed on the last few start-ups of the car that the response to the turning of the key is a tad slower and not as crisp. I have a call into my mechanic and was just looking for some input. Thanks

Failing battery triggers code SYS usually. We had aftermarket radio do it too. Charging system check suggested.

Thanks, tlong. If I replace the battery will the code clear or is that something that needs to be cleared by my mechanic???

I don't think it sets an actual code.. but when you replace the battery all codes should get cleared.

I have the same car. When the new battery is installed the SYS message will be reset due to battery disconnection. You don't need to do anything.

This fires due to voltage irregularities outside normal parameters.

I suggest a load test for both battery and alternator.

tlong, thanks for the additional info. I am on my way to see my mechanic to have him test both the battery and alternator. I will report back on what I find out.

Thanks again.

SYS flashing on speedo

tlong and John, just got back from seeing my mechanic and getting the battery and alternator tested. Turns out battery was on its way out. Pulled it and replaced it and I am back on the road without a problem. My guy said the alternator was hitting the numbers right on the head. Thanks for your quick input this morning.
