will a electronic tach from a 75 or later fit properly in place of 74 mechanical tach ?
or is there a kit to do this ?
still want to keep stock look.
Would hate to buy new one and find out it will not fit.
THANKS Kial

It will probably fit but will not work. You need an HEI distributor to drive it, yours is a points and coil set up.

There's no advantage to an electric tach, so why bother?

I don't what to use points , will be changing to electronic ignition.
I know I can make it work. Just need to know if 75-77 will mount in dash like 74 tach. Did they change mounting holes. I thing it should be the same , but I don't know. This is my first vette.

Thanks , that was the answer I was looking for.

Been there. I've been running an electronic ignition via the Accel F/I ECU for a few years now. You'll need to change out the faceplate to make it look original but that's about it. Be warned though, the screw hole spacing may not line up exactly between your old faceplate and the electronic tach. Also, the screw is softer metal than the plate it goes into so don't try to force it or you'll "screw up" your faceplate screws. Just ream the holes in the direction necessary a little and you should be fine. Another option would be to have the face of the electronic tach repainted to your cars year pattern and colors.

The one disadvantage to an electronic tach is that with the ignition key off the needle might sit (if it's a well used tach anyway) at about 1400 rpm mark. Mine does but this does not bother me in the least. The advantage of the electronic tach is that you will never need to lube or replace another tach cable. My '73 is my daily driver and I have been dealing with issues regularly with the speedo cable. The tach I haven't touched since I installed it though. Wish I could get the speedo modified accordingly. Another change I made early on with my car was I got rid of the "oil pipeline" style oil pressure guage. I "oiled" my stereo, carpet and everything else under there once too often with that thing. Just too unreliable for my taste. Never another issue since I switched to the electronic one.

good luck with it.

I got an electrical one from a later C3, a 76 I think, from a junk yard. Had the face repainted to match my '73. Then I just bought the electrical transducer for the same type car and plugged it into the oil port at the back of the block. Worked really slick.
