OK all you mechanical tach people...

My cross gear seized up, destroying the dist. shaft, so I have to replace both. Looking at all the parts suppliers, it seems as though I can either get an OEM cross gear or a "new and improved" cross gear -- which is the way I want to go. Actually, I plan on getting the cross gear kit, which usu. includes the gear and the coupler.

The question is: Mid America sells their kit for $39.99, while Ecklers, Corvette America, and Corvette Central sell one kit for $40-$55 and another for $75-$90. Is their a difference in the kits?

Ecklers et al. seem to say their cheap kit is the OEM pieces while the expensive kit is the one "guaranteed not to destroy the mainshaft". Mid America only has the one kit, and it, too, is "guaranteed not to destroy the mainshaft".

If you want part numbers, CC's are:
272100 for $39.95
271001 for $74.95
Corvette America's are:
1596 for $89
33004 for $49

Mid America's is:
609-469 for $39.99.

I moved this thread here from the Aftermarket Products Discussion forum. Does anyone have any suggestions for this member?

That's OK, Rob. After not getting a response in After Market, I reposted in C3. Still didn't get any responses though... :cry

However, the issue was 'resolved' when I found out that Mid America doesn't use Fedex to ship to Canada. Since UPS regularly charges $50+ more per shipment, any savings I make by ordering from Mid America are lost. I'm sticking with Ecklers.

i just re-newed my distributor......new cross gear and distributor shaft.....the "old style" is the one i chose....i will be lucky to put 4000 miles a season on my vette...i live in michigan.....the original lasted for 60000 miles ....simple math tells me the older cheaper model will work for me.....it works fine and the needle is just as still as it needs to be....i also installed a kit to upgrade my ignition to electronic.....cost me $90 and it sure has great fire power now.....hope this helps you decide.
