I own a 1976 coupe with a broken tach. I have read that it is most likely the circuit card and would like to change it out. Can someone tell me how to get at the card, which I believe is behind the tach itself? Does the entire dash need to come out or is there a way to get at it by removing the gauge face and withdrawing the instrument?

The bad news is if that is the case the whole dash has to come out. The good news is that there may be some other problem. Have you checked the wire that connects to the coil on top of your distributor? I think there is an issue with a tach filter as well that should be checked. There may also be other areas. I'm sure others will post on these topics.

Taking the dash out is a major job, which, while not particularly difficult, requires organization to keep track of a lot of screws and little pieces. Make sure you use plastic bags, diagrams and digital pictures.

This was the first job I undertook on my car and it took me the better part of the Winter. I admit I'm a slow worker.

Eventually I got it all back together, with the help of the CAC, and the result was well worth the effort and saved me a lot of money.
