I need to take off the trim plate (cover). The service manual says that there are three screws to get it off on each side. But there is rug there before the screws.

Would I need to take these two sections of rug off to get at these screws? How would this come away so I can get the trim plate away?

Thanks!

TR

I think he is refering to the console trim plate. You have to remove the 2 carpeted pieces on each side,3 screws retain these these on both sides. I'll try to scan from my assembly manual. 78-82 are all pretty much the same.

sorry its not to big!

Hi TR,
Are you talking about the sill plates that are on the bottom of the door opening? If so, once you remove the three screws that hold the sill plate down you should be able to just lift it straight up and take it out. There should be no carpet covering any of these screws unless of course we are not talking about the same thing. If we aren't talikng about the same thing maybe a photo would help us help you solve your problem.

I thought that too, but then I looked at it and I didn't even see any screws that should be there!! Maybe the rug is hiding them really well, but I couldn't find them at all. So they should be accessed right away from there? That's how that whole part (including the rug) comes off?

Okay, I found the screw that was closest to the front of the car, but I can't find the other two screws on each side of that panel!!

Would I need to take the seats out? :( Please tell me no.

It makes it ALOT easier. It'll only take you about 15-20 minutes without air tools,5-10 with.

It'll only take 20 minutes to take the seats off? And what are "air tools"? I'll take a look at the Assembly Manual about the seats and see what's involved.

But I still can't find those two other screws on each side of the panels. :(

air tools, are tools that use a compressed air from a compressor to power them instead of electric or battery, you see air tools at every garage, theyr the ones that make the cool noises

TR........... the screws are there, trust me. The carpet will hide them well. Remove the seats and at worse case run a magnet around the top of the carpet panel and see if you can locate them that way. Or even take a dog brush (or your wife/girl friends hair brush) and move the carpet fibers around. Thre will be three screws spaced pretty evenly across the top panel.

TR,

Take a good look at the attachment from "BURGLAR" see the 3 screw location's??? One is forward, one is toward the middle where the panel narrows and the other is toward the back side of the panel.

The back one is hard to get to with the seat in, it can be done, but will require you push down on the bottom seat to get the angle you need to get the screw out. There are little collar washers on each screw. As NUT said they are there, use your hand a feel around for them or take your finger tips and go across the carpet area, (like dragging your finger nails across a chauk board) you find them. Once you do this a few times ;) you'll have no problems finding them in the future.

If your seats are mechanical (Non-Electrical) then it is only 4 bolts or nuts to remove (if memory serves me correctly on my '81 they are 7/16" nuts) from the bottom side of the car. If you chose to remove them ;)

The magnet idea is a good one. And the brush. Surely I'll find them. :) I'll take a look, and if I don't need to take the seats out, then that is better. But if they are only 4 bolts, then that's not bad either. It would be more of a hassle, though, to take them out.

TR.... if you pull the seats you will find that one seat is removed by 7/16" nuts from the bottom (i.e. studs on the seat rails) and the other will have 7/16" bolts removed from threaded inserts in the floor pan (unless of course mine is an oddball).

Let us know if you have nay more problems.
