Hey guys i was thinking maybe of a TB Bypass. I know some people have done this, and since i only drive in the warm weather why not do it. Can it hurt? Does it help? Can anybody walk me through this mod or let me know what i need before i proceed.

Thanks

well your in luck! i just did a write up for another member to do this procedure....

-What is the TB Bypass setup?

If you look on the passenger side of the TB there is a 1 inch hose running into the TB. You disconnect that and get a 3/8" male male fitting and undo the other line under the front of the TB by the tstat housing and connect them. This keeps the intake nice and cool which in return keeps the air cooler for a better charge and in return creates more HP. You can buy the parts for about 2 bucks but ecklers sells it for about 10 bucks or so...

Looks similar to this

enclosed is a pic from ecklers of what the "kit" looks like

Yes, Its quite do-able and simple. (here is how I did it on my 96)
Locations should not be THAT different for an 87.

btw, Most folks do not even buy the kit.

Go to a local auto zone and get a pair of caps to seal up the Throttle Body.

Cover the area of the engine around and above the Opti Spark(the 87 DOES have optispark, right?) with a towel or something to absorb any coolant that might leak out of the lines.

Follow the smaller coolant hose from the radiator cap area to the driver's side of the TB.
Yu will see where it comes out the other side and goes along the passengers side of the fuel rail.
Pull the driver's and passenger's side lines off the TB and plug the TB with the caps you picked up at AutoZone. 3$

If you are as lucky as I was, the line that originally ran to the driver's side, will actually reach where the pass. side goes back into the system above the fuel rail.

I simply pulled the pass side line out completely, and with a new hose clamp, attached the original driver's side line straight from the radiator split to the passenger's side fuel rail entry.

Checked it for coolant leaks after a quick trip around the block.

Hope it makes sense the way I re-told it -

Rain FYI

The LT1 and LT4 are the only ones that have an Opti-spark. Don't know about the LS motors. So from 92 on they have Opti.

L98 uses a rear mounted regular type distributor.

Go with Mad-Mic's way. Pretty straight forward. I had to replace the section of hose going to the front of the TB, as it was preformed into a U. (or maybe it was on the side) Either way I replaced one section of hose about 6-8 inches.

Thanks My Friend!

I had that in the back of my mind as I was typin late last night.
Thats why I made sure he knew this was how "I did it". hahah

Yes , it is very simple on an 87. You can do it two ways. One is to remove the existing hoses from the TB and splice them together with a pipe sleave and two hose clamps. I did it that way but I had trouble with leaks at the splice. A better way is to go to NAPA and get a right angle hose ~3 ft long on one side and six inches on the other . Then cut it to fit so that the short side fits on the water outlet from the intake manifold ( same place as the original short hose is attached). Route the other end around behind the A?C compressor and connect to the heater hose hard line. That way you eliminate a leak potential. You can get a rubber cap to put on the open pipe under the TB or you can leave it open.

I disconnected the 2 coolant hoses at the Throttle Body and I ran a longer hose directly from the intake manifold to the coolant line on the passanger's side that feeds the heater core. Good luck

Thanks Mad-Mic
