....burned to the axles....POOF!

Just minutes ago, I was in the garage working on the '67 when I heard a POP. Looked up through the trap door to the attic and the electric roof fan was in flames!

I hit the main power switch, grabbed a fire extinguisher and jumped up the ladder in time to blow the flames out without having to spray powder all over the attic.

If I had been in the house at the time...................... :(

I've got second thoughts about using an electric roof fan now.

:eek Good thing you had quick reflexes! Has your heart-rate calmed down, yet?
Heidi

Even though the fan has cooled down now, I keep returning to the scene every five minutes, just to be sure. :eek

Tomorrow, when my knees stop knocking, I'll take it down and have a look inside....but it's NOT going back up.

WOW!!
thank god you were there at the time.
let me guess, after a scare like that and what COULD have happened, you must have a bit of extra laundry now............
:D

maybe you should get a lottery ticket with luck like that, I'm glad you were there to catch it and nothing but the fan was burned.

Are you sleeping in the garage tonight? :D
I might in your situation.

Glad you caught it.

Hi! 67

Glad you caught it, it sure would have made for a very bad day. Question, why the roof fan?

Although you (in NY) will understand, many people aren't aware just how humid and hot it can get in an Ontario summer.

I wanted to sleep in the garage tonight, but the Mrs. says, "There are limits to this project." :D

Yeah, Larry. I've said to a few neighbours that I had visions of an imminent meltdown while I was climbing that ladder.

Word spread quickly and several dropped by to be sure the car was ok. They keep buggin' me about the party date. :D

P.S. I was lucky-------- to be sure.

Thank God* you were in the right place at the right time!!

dayum!

Very Glad that you happened to notice the fire, you should have asked the Mrs if she wanted to go to the drive in tonight, and brought a tv and a blanket to the garage.

Failure Analysis

67HEAVEN,

Thank goodness you saved the car!
Oh, and we're all glad that you're OK, too. :D

Seriously, we'd all be interested in the failure analysis after you've had a chance to review the damage...

Hi! 67

The reason I asked the question on your attic fan; I was curious to the type of attic ventilation that you have. I teach carpentry and cabinet making and we build a 2000 sq. ft. home every year with high school students. The best ventilation system is the continuous ridge-eve ventilation system and it only needs nature to work correctly. I am not sure how I would cope the loss of all that great work on your 67, but if your garage is attached to your home you could have lost much more that the 67.

I am glad to here that everything is OK!

The electric roof fan was installed above the attic trap door (in the garage) to draw heat up through the door and cool the lower portions of the garage. With the overhead door or the garage windows open, there was excellent airflow.

We built the project garage separate from the house.
