Just for the heck of it, I checked my base timing today with a borrowed timing gun. Let the engine warm up, pulled the wire, and shot the pulley. 0??? WTF??? Base timing of ZERO! No wonder the car's been feeling sluggish off the line. Bumped it to about 9 and went for a drive. A stomp in 2nd at ~20 mph broke the rear loose. Yeah! Maybe I won't have as much chip tuning to do after all...

Still haven't taken it much above 4k RPM... checked a couple of plugs and they looked pretty clean so it's not running lean or anything. Soon...

Base timing is 6 degrees before TDC with the EST wire disconnected.

Im at 12* timing. Per comps cams my cam calls for anywhere between 10* to 14* base timing. So far so good. Only problem is my marker to check the timing only goes to 12*

by the way, might as well put your foot into that motor. Every Corvette that comes off the line goes on the chassy dyno to redline. My car does not burn a drop of oil and i've had my foot into it since day one.

I'm not using GM parts... it was recommended to take it easy(er) for the first 1k miles or so.

Where on the cam card might I find total suggested advance? All I see on mine is what's ground in (4*).

I called comp cams and asked. There should be a tech number for comp cams you can call.

Like I said, dont be afraid to put your foot into that motor. If its going to blow its going to blow. Waiting 1000 miles is not going to change that.

not sure what cam you are running but mine is 224/230 112 lsa with arouind .550 lift

It's a Lingenfelter 74219 - 219/219/112, .560 w/1.6 rr's. Yours sounds like a pretty aggressive cam - what intake are you using with it?

Going to check the timing today............where and or what is the EST wire I have to disconnect? Is that the "tan" wire by the dist cap? Yes, I know I need a manual but I have twin baby girls due in a month and the wife has cut ALL Corvette funds for now.

Ok, just checked it 8 deg BTDC and I run super in it. Good? The car runs great, I was just wanting to check it. What would make me want to make it 6 deg over having 8 deg? IE: what should I "look" for?

I checked the timing again and I can see the 14* base timing on the flywheel. I moved the timing up to 14* base timing and no problems. Actually seems to run a tad bit better.

Rich.....Congrats. Amazing what some basic tuning will do.

The EST is the tan wire. An underhood sticker should list the stock base timing and conditions for setting it. Too much advance will cause knocking, but the ECM will back it off. Running premium fuel probably allows more base advance w/o knocking on a car designed for regular.

My base timing is set at 10 BTC, but the chip is programmed with that in mind.

As hard as it can be to endure, a break-in period never hurt anyone, but you know that.
