Has anyone added one of those to an 85? And if so what kind of trouble can you get in?
It looks like you have to remove the glass to drill the holes to mount the darn thing, plus the gap between the glass and the top piece is less then the thickness of the head of the bolt used to bolt it on. I don't have a problem grinding the bolt down....and being an engineer I know I can figure out several other alternatives.

Why? cause I like the look and the idea of being able to see the brake light. Folks around the Toledo area do not know how to use turn signals and they love to pull out in front of you knowing that they have more important places to go to....

Hi Eagle,

The holes in the glass for the bolts are about ¾¨. The bolt heads fit into the holes and are countersunk into the glass frame. GM used Torx bolts.

Get the third eye from a late model car. The lamps for the early ones are about $11. each, Ouch!! I’m not sure when they changed, my 90 has the expensive ones.

BTW, the rear glass goes for $2400. Drill slow, drill true, don’t be blue.

Added one to the 85 I used to have, went on with no problem. :dance

As I recall, I bought the third brake light kit from Mid-America with the electronic module that allows you to tap into the wiring harness in the halo instead of having to hard wire it back to the brake light switch. Saved a lot of work!

I did remove the glass to drill the holes needed , figured it beats cracking it and having to replace it. Wasn't really that hard a job.

The third brake light from Mid-America comes in primer, so I carefully painted mine with the correct Dupli-Color spray paint for my 85, and also sprayed on a coat of Dupli-Color clear. Look very Good, almost a perfect match.

I wouldn't do it! Just too much chance of having shards of glass all over the place!
Plus, Why put something on that isn't necessary? Wasn't required in 85, why put it on.

But if you must, I recently met a fellow that had purchased an add on light which mounted on the inside, with some sort of magical glue. The wire was stuffed up under the valance over and down in back of the upholstery, to the lighting harness. I didn't get into the specifics of where he got it. There were two small screws that provided access to the back of the module for bulb replacement, but they were really small bulbs. This guy was into all sorts of trick things like 10000 watt amplifiers and mega huge speakers and outragerous sound systems, and rap music, so I really didn't take him too seriously.

I'll keep an eye out for him again, and see if I can get specifics...

I installed the kit from Mid America on my '84....
All I did was follow the included instructions....
