Google "Speedometer Cable Thread Pitch" and I'm sure you'll find the answer. If you cross-threaded the cable on the tach drive by hand you likely didn't damage the threads unless you used a big pair of pliers to force the connection together.

When I connect my tach cable to my HEI I often have to try several times before I get it right. It really helps to use a strong light to help you see what you're doing and it also helps to use a rag to clean off the threads on the distributor and use compressed air to blow out the threads of the cable housing.
