Well, my father and I have had a 72 for a while now and this past weekend we pulled the motor so we can rebuild it and have some stuff done to the body. The guy that had that car before didnt know a whole lot about the motor but he did tell us that his neighbor built it and the motor came from a 69 vette and supposedly has 350 hp and 350 ft-lbs. We know the motor is running 11:1 compression, it has an aluminum edelbrock intake, a 750cfm carb, i think it has aftermarket heads, and a different cam. Here are some pictures of what we did this past saturday

I wanted to post this on this website because i figured some of you guys could help us out. Im not a big motor guy, im use to working on trucks and doing suspension stuff but my dad has a few motor rebuilds under his belt.

I wanted to ask you guys where you thought the best place to buy your parts when your workin in chevy small blocks? And also, whats the best corvette supplier to order stuff from? The radiator support on this car has seen better days and will definitly be replaced before the motor goes back in.

Thanks a lot guys!

I use Rik`s out of FL for corvette parts.Get all your motor stuff from Jegs.com ,shopheaders.com

Those are great pics. Looks like fun! Ecklers has fast shipping but their parts are expensive. Corvette Central is cheaper but slower in getting your parts but they seem to have a substantial inventory. There is Corvette America, ZIP, and Mid America Motorworks as far as Corvette Vendors.

Those are all good places.

Also don't forget your local auto-parts store. Carburetors, intake manifolds, etc (basic SB parts) can be found there. Most Stores can have parts shipped to them overnight and you don't pay for the shipping. That's how I get parts next day.

Things that are Corvette specific (weatherstripping, interior, etc) you'll probably have to get online.

Looks like a '69/'70 350/350 to me. Engine suffix code stamped on the pad at the front of the right head will identify the engine and tell you where and when it was assembled.

:)

I had that intake on a 79 Camaro in high school. It will be better off used as a paperweight today. Thanks for the memories.

thanks guys. We've used corvette central, mid America, and year one in the past.

sharkcar, wats wrong with the intake? lol

mike, the block came from a 69 vette... but thats about all that is on that motor that came from a vette, besides the valve covers i think.

If it's a Torker manifold, I also had that in my high school car (71 Camaro RS)... It wasn't a good match for the stock 350.

so you think we should go with a new manifold? id like to go with something chrome along with a chrome carb and valve covers. The motor supposedly made 350/350, like i said earlier, so thats what we are hoping to have after the rebuild. Anyone have any good suggestions on a good carb/ intake combo that you can get in chrome and would be good for the street? We'd like to put a carb on there that isn't like a having a garden hose haha. I dont think we need a 750 double pumper again. Also, i guess this kind of goes with my last question, but when i'm looking at carb's what kind of cfm should i be looking for? something around 500 or so? We're not looking for somethin that gets 20 mpg haha just better than whats on there.

thanks!

sorry, i dont mean to double post but here are some pics i just took of the motor as it is right now sitting in our garage:

those ones say:
21 GM
3970010

on the side of the other head it says this in small letters:
J249

That's a 3970010 350 block, cast on October 24, 1969 or 1979; what's stamped on the machined surface of the block directly in front of the passenger side cylinder head?

That intake is a very old design that does not provide a lot of low end torque. You will be much happier with a modern dual plane intake.

ok i found the number you were talking about. it reads:
100148726 V1028CNU

Yea, im pretty sure a dual plane is the way im going to go. I was just looking around on jegs and summit's sites and there is a huge variety of carbs and intakes that i could use... i dont even know where to start! haha

At first blush, it looks to have been assembled at the Flint plant, and you're probably right about it coming out of a 1969 Vette. Your engine's build date is October 28, 1970. This makes sense, since the 1969 production year was extended due a strike.

I believe "CNU" decodes to a Powerglide tranny. I'm not 100% sure of any of this, but I'll check for more info later... I'm watching our beloved Redskins get another a_ _ whooping. :eyerole

are you sure? because where i was looking, it said the motor was definitly from a chevy truck or a vette i believe and the guy that built it claims it is from a vette

The CNU indicates that a Powerglide was used with the assembled engine. I don't believe Vettes were equipped with the Powerglide.

Of course, you can easily turn this engine into a beast!

Hey guys

Haven't been around lately, figured I'd give ya an update on what we've been up to in my garage.

Here's the bare block after we stripped it and got it back from the machine shop where it was bored .40 over, boiled, and planed. We also got new pistons from the machine shop and had them put in some ARP studs for the main caps since its only got 2 bolt mains. We then painted her chevy orange (along with the bell housing and tranny)

Then we started puttin it together. We bought one of those edelbrock kits that come with a cam, aluminum heads, timing chain kit, etc. That claims to give you 410 horse (if i remember correctly) on a stock 350 with a 650cfm. We got a new edelbrock 750cfm carb.

We still gotta do a few more things to get her running, like wiring up the new distributor, we decided to go with an Mallory HFI distributor.

Here's the project that has had us sidetracked for a couple days. I had to change the driver side CV, and then eded up having to change the rotors and pads and i had to replace one of the calipers... major pain in the rear... and ANOTHER money put haha f***in toyotas. I did paint the hub covers chevy orange though :cool

O yea, i almost forgot to tell you about another dilemma that we are going to be dealing with in the near future. The Edelbrock top end kit we got came with a higher rise intake and now the top of the carb is about level with the fenders. So when we put that round filter element on top of it, the hoods not gonna close. We were thinking about cutting a hole for it since getting a new cowl inductio hood or a big block hood would be too much money after we got it painted it everything. Any opinions on that?

And isnt it crazy how the car went from this :
