Wow :thumb

...We were thinking about cutting a hole for it since getting a new cowl inductio hood or a big block hood would be too much money after we got it painted it everything. Any opinions on that?...

Cut a hole in the hood and then what?

Your rebuild looks good. Only one thing - others may have different opinions, but I would caution you on the use of roller tip rockers. I had a meticulous engine rebuild and used roller tips - mine failed and it broke a valve spring (click here). I've seen others fail too. Just a word of caution that's all...

Very cool stuff and a great job you guys are doing!! You're making some nice memories for down the road.

Keep up the good work!

You might want to think about changing the intake to a lower one before you cut a hole in your nice hood.

Are you speaking about roller TIP or roller Rockers? Pictures that I was able to see seem to indicate Crane roller Rockers.

If roller TIP, please indicate brand.

I was referring to roller tip rocker arms. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but those appeared to be roller tip only. Anyway, I had a bad experience with them.

Yea they are roller tip rockers, i dont remember the brand though. However, i think they'll be alright. We're not runnin a very high compression and doesn't have that much power lol. We did a lil tinkerin this weekend and here's how she looks now. We covered a bunch of hoses with braided steel covers and hooked everything up to the carb and put in the distributor. Its not totally done yet though cause we need to wire the HEI distributor up correctly, adjust the carb a bit cause she's runnin wayy rich, fix a small oil leak which we dont know where its at yet, fix a header leak on the driver side (you can hear it in the vid) and figure out what we are going to do about an air cleaner that will clear the hood. Then after all the snow melts we can break her in and I can post up some vids of some tire being smoked :-). Well heres some pics of how the motor looks now and a vid of the second start up and in the middle of the third start up. Sadly i wasnt recording the first start up when a 2 ft flame shot up outta the carb haha. Wat do ya think?

Hello :wtyly from S.E. IL.
A truly awesome project :cool! I too would like a rebuild like yours but it will have to wait :ugh. I am in need of a lifting frame and was looking at your thread and noticed in pics #4 & 5 posted on 01-02-08 what appears to be two upright 2X4’s. Is this part of your lifting frame? If so could you post a picture of it in its entirety? I was wondering what you used for the horizontal beam.
Thanks for a great thread :thumb.

Hey guys, sorry i haven't around in a lil while. I've been busy at school and we haven't had time to play with the car much. it is running however we cannot take it out since its winter and the roads are too crappy. And we are still trying to figure out the correct wiring for the hei distributor. anyone know how to correctly wire it?

as for the pictures of the lifting frame...

these are the best one's i got on my computer. i would set it up and take a picture for you but im two hours away from home at school. But the way it is set up is there a piece of 2x4 1/8 square steel running across the cieling. one end is behind help up by a piece of 3" angle welded to a support beam in the middle of the garage. the other end is supported by wood 2x4's anchored into the cinderblock wall. a 1/2 piece of plate with a long hole cut in it is welded in the middle of the 2x4 steel tube on the cieling. that is support to the hook on a 2 ton cable come a long. we pull the car in the garage, hang the come a long to make sure the car is centered under the come a long. then hook chains up to 4 pieces of 1/8 in plate that were bolted to the side of the heads and up a leveler. Then we slide support posts that were made from 2 2x4's standing up on end that hade a base on the bottom and channel in the top to fit into the beam on the cieling. we slide them in as close to the car as we can to give extra support for the beam when we get the full wait of the motor on it. then pull the motor up and back the car up. we had to unbolot the tranny from the bell housing in order to get the motor out. we couldnt lift it all the way up with it bolted on. so we had to lower the motor and tranny back down, unbolt it, then pull the motor out. so if you do it, i would sugest unbolting the tranny before you try pulling the motor.

i know these may not be the best description so hopefully my pictures do a better juctice. if you have any questions, feel free to ask

Thank you. Your discription and photos have answered my questions. Good luck with school.

You should consider a dual plane manifold for street use as it will give you more low end torque. Have fun when you get it on the street.

cool, im glad i can help. and thanks. I'm finally going home this weekend, so hopefully we'll be able to toy with the car a lil... i'll keep you guys updated

I just had this happen as well this past fall. We are in the process of installing full roller rockers.

well, i figured it was time for a well needed update....

Wow. I was reading this thread from the start and relised it was very old. Motor sounds good, looks like a road test is in order. Congrats :beer

yea, its been a while since i've been on here, but we got a lot done in that time. Still needs the timing adjusted a little. We want it to be 10 to 12 degrees off tdc and right now, the mark is just off the tab. So it should run better when we fix that. Along with a front end alignment, we replaced all the bushing and balljoints and stuff in the front end while the motor was out.

we've had the car out a few times since the motor was done, we took it to a show before we put the hood on and found out wen you pull into a show revving a loud ass car with no hood on it, you tend to draw a small crowd wen you park it haha. It runs great though... cant wait to get the motor broke in though so we can see what she'll do wen we take her up to around 2500 or so and drop the pedal on the left :thumb haha She should have over 400hp to the wheels... so that should be fun.

Also, i wanted to say that I dont think I'll buy too many more Duralast parts from autozone. We went through 3 different calipers from them that were defective. We finally got tired of it and got napa calipers. But yea, it was bull. We replaced both fronts and on all of them, the two halves of the calipers either did not match up, or the mating surfaces didnt mate up flat. autozone sucks

what? no one like my video? or is everyone jealous? hahaha

Hey.....video looks excellent! Motor runs real nice and sounds good, you guys did a great job. Looks like plenty of vacuum for headlights too. What did you decide to do about the hood? At one time you were considering cutting a hole in it.:ugh

thanks. and yea, we got vacum, the video is actually of us starting up the car to see if we hooked the vacum lines up right after a bit of trial and error lol ;shrug

and for the hood, we ended up finding a round air cleaner at autozone that dropped down quite a bit, so we put that on there with our filter element and its just enough to clear.
