timing chain

100k easy... they get stretched out after awhile, but they are hardly ever a problem. They tend to be a replacement item while tinkering or fixing other things (like when you have all the parts off in front of it, it is worth checking to see if it is stretched or worn)

A couple of yrs ago I replaced the chain on my '78 Trans Am (original owner). It had 160K miles at the time, very little wear on the chain. Belts have to be changed more often, every 60K miles or so.

Sothpaw, Paul replaced my timing chain when he did all that work at 132k. He thought it might well have been the original (judging from the condition of the other stuff around it) and it had stretched noticeably. Essentially, timing was off by a couple degrees as a result.

If you're still on the original water pump, get that done at the same time...

Incidently, belts today have 100k+ mile change intervals as well. All Subaru's 2.5l engines are 105k. Of course, with the *()^#%O^*# crank seal leak that engine is known for, it's unusual to get more than 60k from a belt anyway...
