What is the average set timing that all of you find to work best with your stock L-98 car's? with, or with out chip's.

8 - 9 degrees for me (stock chip)

12* for me :D runs strong as he!! :_rock

12 for me too. hey mad-mike
Steve and Mad mike, how are your idles at 12 deg in gear at a stop?...of course.
You guy's have after market chip's also?

mine is lumpy due to the cam and very responsive due to the 12deg

i run a stock chip ( for now :D ) and it's between 600-700 rpm in N or 500-600 in D.

idle to WOT is very crisp and the car really responds. i was having a problem where the car would fall on it's face from a dead romp and now she just wants to spin the tires if i'm on the street.

at the track i can pull 1.90's 60' times with stock 1600 rpm stall and stock 2.59 rear end on goodyear F1's 285/40/17's :D

Timing

I run around 10* Kinda afraid to get up near 12 or more. 8 just wasnt enough fell on its face going from dead stop to WOT.

Jus my .02

i get NO Ping at all on 93 octane. when i goto the track i've been mixing a 50/50% mix of 104 octane to help while racing. even with out the mix i still don't feel it but every bit counts :D

i think i'm gonna play with 14* timing to see what happens. if i can break a 1.8x 60' that will probably put me in the 13.2x range instead of the 13.3x range.

next mods will be TPiS headers with Y pipe, AFPR, custom chip. hopefully that'll put me in the 12.8x range or better. winter mods will be heavy porting on heads and intake or go with the LT1 intake conversion and a ZZ409 cam with RR's and RL's :)

i know a guy with stock internals that ran a best of 10.9's on a ZZ9 cam. his friend ran a 10.8 on the 219 ling cam. these guys were running 4 links. the 10.9 guy had a 6 speed. the 10.8 guy had a 350 conversion and high stall.

Rich you will be giving Andy a fit after your done with your upgrades :D don't tell'em but i smell 11.x's on your setup when we get it tuned :upthumbs

in street trim easy low 12's ET Streets 11.x's ;)

Well, low 12's would surpass my goal... mid-high 12's is all I really want... for now. Heh. Originally, I just wanted to mod mine enough to beat Sothpaw's STOCK LT1. Then after he did his stuff, I had to work on beating THAT TOO.

BTW - you do already have roller lifters in your engine. I thought the ZZ409 was a flat tappet cam, though (ie, meant for my year rather than yours). Maybe I'm thinking of the ZZ9.

On the suject of timing, I'm at between 7 and 8. Any more and I get horrid pings. Will advance more after doing all the work this winter.

the cam is from an 89 so it should be no problem. TPiS has this cam listed under hydro roller cams. maybe they have the same grind for flat tappet cams. never looked but i'm sure they do. i would look to confirm but i'm at my g/f's on dial up :cry

on a set of DR's i think you will be low 12's. if i would have to put money on it i'd say 12.2's easily ;)

BUT.... so may Andy with some DR's and some muff elim's :)

BTW going to cecil tomorrow night and trying to best my 13.38 time with cooler temps and lower humidity. then to capitol fri. you should come to capitol fri.

Would love to come on Friday, but going out to celebrate Bonnie's birthday, which is this weekend. And pretty soon I'll be tearing into the car, so unfortunately I'm probably done for the year. :(

Interesting article in the December Corvette Fever . It's actually on replacing the intake gaskets (timely, since I need to take my manifold off). However, they talk about setting timing at the end, and mention that while the 85-88 L98 was designed for 6 degrees, the experts at Corvette Clinic feel it runs better at 0-2 (better idle, more low end torque). 89-91 were designed for more offset. Mic, wonder what your wonder would run at 2...

What do you mean by "More off set"?
I was wondering if since I'm running the 1.6's now, could my engine tolerate more timing then it would with the stock 1.5's on?

timing has nothing to do with what size RR's your running. it's about getting the piston on the upstroke to fire as far away as possible with out getting ping.

if you were running higher compression say 11.1^ you could run more timing cause you'd have to run higher octane.

Rich i heard that also BUT when my timing was at base it was falling on its face hard. i read a bunch of posts over at www.corvetteforum.com that they discussed this and most said it's the car setup, some like 0-2 some like 10-12 others around 8-9. most though were in the 10-12 range for best times.

BTW i pulled a 1.887 60' tonight with a 13.313 and my highest MPH was 104.65 :D so i think she is about right. i should of hit 13.2's easily tonight but driver error played a big factor again :(
