On a L81 you only need to set base timing (or how do you call it) so a simple timing light will do. If you want to get fancy and want to read timing at higher rpm's you'll need a better timing light with dail.

Just be sure that the power leads are long enough to reach the battery. A standard timing light is just fine for basic tune up and test work. If you are going to re curve your distributor and need to see total advance then get a dial back light. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a good light for the hobby user.
