Hi folks back again and as usual I have a question. I changed my oil and anti freeze last weekend and guess what I now have a lovley leaking water pump. Question is should I go ahead and change the timming chain and gears while I have the pump out of the way? The car runs great but with 137k on it I'm just not sure. I also would like to know if it is necessary to drop the oil pan to replace the timming cover? I have heard yes and no. Best I remember on older small blocks we never fooled with dropping the pan. Thanks in advance Charlie:(

I would.

You'll have to drop it enough to get the lip of the cover past the pan; it's not recommended but you can do it. Replace the cover with a two-piece unit while you're there. ;)

I would definately replace it while you're in there. I would also definately consider "gear drive" rather than a timing chain. I had a Pete Jackson gear drive in my '85 and loved it. You'll never have to worry about the timing chain again:)

I just relaced my chain and yes I had to drop the pan. Isn't the gear drive a little loud? The ones I have heard with gear drive make quite a bit of noise.

Yes, it a cool sound, but the gear drive will be quite a bit noisier. Sorta sounds like a 6:71 GMC blower! :L
