Tire recommendations?

I'm looking for better grip & ride than my stock P225/70R15's

I read that the Goodyear Eagle GT @ P255/60R15 were options in 81. Would the modern GT II version of this tire be a good choice? Any other suggestions?

I like the stock aluminum wheels, so wouldn't want to change them.

Try Tire rack.com this is a link from my corvette club www.suncountrycorvette.com and punch the size you want either the 225 or 255 and I believe they will show about 8 or 10 differant sizes with rating,comparisons and such. I hope this helps.

I still have the original 255/60/15 stored away in my shed :eyerole I'm not exactly sure why :confused ANYWAY..

I personally would recommend BF Goodrich tires, the ride and handling is far superior to that of the GoodYears. The GoodYears are/were made from a harder rubber compound or something. With the GoodYears I felt every crack and pebble in the road. The BFG's give a much softer ride and if autocrossing just add air pressure to stiffen up the side walls.

This is only my opinion and you know what they say about opinions

Bottom line get the best tire for the money, as they say "There's a lot riding on them"

Of course, looking at all those tires caused me to glance at some wheels. I may have to retract my stance on the stock wheels...some Torq Thrust Ds might look pretty good.

i have Kelly Chargers. They look nice and do well in rain and snow, but are just a bit harder(see not great traction on dry road) then i like. My next set will be yoko's or dunlops as i don't care for BF or Goodyears(see rubber seperating from tire)

I agree with BudD on this one.. I have been running BF tires since I bought the car and I love them.. They handle and ride great.. But I don't keep all of the tire for myself I sometimes leave a little on the road for others to enjoy.

BF Goodrich: Comp T/A ZR vs Radial T/A?

Any benefit going with the ZR tire (no snow in south Georgia but we do get some rain) vs. the classic Radial T/A? Benefit of the 255's vs. 225's?

I'm considering some chrome Torq Thrust D's, any opinions on these wheels? Maybe increase to 16"?

On the ZR tires I think for me is to much money to spend, I mean when are you going to use a tire thats rated for 300+kph..For the tire size going from a 225/70 to a 255/60 they will fit the same in the hole, give you a little more take off traction and I think give it a higher cool guy factor..As far as the wheels I'm not sure I've stuck with the stock ones I like um..

Thanks. Good advice, I don't plan on having my stock L81 going that fast...I just need some extra grip for low end torque. Looks like BFG Radial T/As 255/60/15

tire question

This is more of a curiosity question than anything else, but i was wondering why i come accross so many people with older sports/muscle cars that are so insistent on using tires such as the BFG radial TA's and/or Dunlop GT qualifiers, even though there are often more modern and better gripping tires out there and often available in sizes that will fit. I understand when someone wants to maintain the original wheels and does not want to upsize...that's not my issue here though, but in my humble opinion, I want the absolute best gripping tire i can afford to buy period. I don't buy a tire just cause the raised white letters look cool and such. If it doesnt perform i want nothing to do with it. I know sometimes i am in the minority because i think handling is as important as horsepower (I could never build a car that was great on the strip but couldn't hold a corner) That 's just my opinion. Any feedback would be great.

Yep I be a bit old well over 50 but under 60 Years ago I did a LOT of autocross racing both SCCA and NCCC I found the best all around tire was the T/A Comp. You could put 40lbs air in them and they stuck like glue racing, lower the pressure to 30 for street driving and they provided excellent handling and a nice ride.

Back then "Hoosiers" were the tire of choice for racing. Goodyears where too hard of a compound and had a tendency to break loose, esp when racing in cooler weather. The footprint of the Goodyear G/T was a bit wider than that of the T/A Comp but the T/A out performed the Goodyear... IMHO..

The raised letters on the T/A is not even close to the original Goodyears, as the T/A has solid lettering and GT has raised outlined lettering

The last C3 I owned was a '76 with BFG 70's on her. I personally found the handling on the street esp. in the rain to be wanting. For me I would stick with Goodyears. Just MHO.
