I have several friends that have fox body mustangs and they all run very well. One friend in particiular has a 93 GT that runs 12.70's. When we run he always gets me out of the hole and I spend the rest of the time playing catch-up. What mods do you suggest I do first so I can show him the taillights. I'm on a limited budget so I don't see a supercharger in my near future. Thanks in advance.:D

Rear end gear change. Pricey, but will work great.

I don't want to insult your intelligence, but how are you doing your launch? Is your traction control turned OFF (that helps if you spin a bit)? Are you spinning too much and not hooking up enough?

You should be running around 13.3- 13.6. You are less than a second away from the reported 12.70. That is most likely his BEST time and not his most-of-the-time time.

Why 13.3 versus 12.70-
You have a 3.42 rear end (MN6, right?). I'm sure he has a 4.10 or 3.73 rear end. He won't get to 170 mph. You will. I'm sure you will out corner him too... he has a drag car.

Here are your stats, courtesy of the CAC-

Dark Shark,

Thanks for the input. My problem is that he hooks like a big dog with those MT drag radials and he does have 4.10 gears. He primarly uses he car for drag racing and I don't. Mine is a daily driver and I don't want to put on a set of drag radials and worry if it's gonna rain before I get home.:ugh

I always run him down at the end of the 1320, but it's just a little too late. I'm wondering if exhaust and a Vararam B-2 air intake will give me that little bit of extra performance to run him down. If not maybe heads and a cam are in my future. If only he'd take those mickeys off.:eyerole

Best and Cheapest Mod I can think of is to the Driver, Go up around Kirksville Mo. And Hit them Curvy azz Back country Black top's and Learn how to Drive that Beast!!! Hwy 6,Hwy 11,Hwy149,Hwy156, County O,County P,County J and several others!! You Just need to Learn how to Bring that Beast OUT of the Hole SMOKE'IN and Don't LOOK Back!!! That's the Road's I learned to Drive on!! And I haven't Found a RUSTang yet that won't Eat My Dust!!!!!!!!:Steer :lou :Steer :lou :Steer :lou :Steer :lou :Steer :lou :Steer :lou   :pat :pat junk!!ps.I Don't mean this as a Slam, A C5 is Just a Different Kind'a Animal than previous Vette's and Take some Practice Gett'n out of the HOLE!!

Junkie,

I learned to drive on some nasty roads myself and don't have a problem throwing my vette into the twisties. I just can't beat him in the 1320. If we raced on the twisties he wouldn't have a chance.:L

I'm just not willing to put on drag radials and launching at 3500 just to beat him and to beat on my silver bullet. Rearends are expensive and a pain to install so I would rather just run him down and pass him like he's standing still.;)

Thanks for the input and keep those comments coming. I need all the help I can get.:upthumbs

I have a little experience (200+ passes) at the strip. I have run a '97 A4 and a '02 Z06.

There are a couple of things that you can do to hook up better. Gears is certainly one, and that will likely be my next mod. Drag radials or some other soft compound tire will help quite a lot, too. The drawback is that the drag radials I have do not handle very well as a daily driver, especially when the pressure is down to 15# like I run at the strip. Also, sticky tires can expose "the next weakest part", increasing your risk of breaking some driveline component. Drag radials took about 0.2-0.3 seconds off my 60' time.

I also added a VaraRam, but that won't help the launch. It will help at the top end of the track, both in et and trap. I think I got just about what they advertise: 0.3-0.4 seconds and 3-4MPH. Between drag radials and VaraRam, I picked up about 0.6 seconds and 4-5MPH. 0.6 seconds is a very good improvement.

You said it yourself; his is set up for drag racing and yours is not. Try both cars at an autocross. If the setup is left the same, I would expect your car to be faster. I would bet money on a road course.

Spike Strips...That would be the cheapest way...

DRTH VTR,

You said you have been running drag radials. Have you had any problem with your output shafts. I've heard certain companies say they have seen M6 cars break output shafts hooking hard on the street. I have also used drag radials on some of my other cars and love them, but they were all solid live axles. Great info on the vararam though, I think I will order one next week. Thanks for your input..:upthumbs

I have not had problems (yet). I do a burnout (drop the clutch at 5000 RPM in 2nd on wet concrete) and I launch fairly hard. But I have to believe that it is only a matter of time until I do break something. However, that is at a prepared track with traction compond all over the place. On the street it seems that it would be hard to hook so well that you break half shafts. I can still overpower the drag radials on a prepared track. The street will not hook as well. Just my $0.02

Definatley go with a small shot of nitrous. 75 - 100 should be enough and if setup correctly will not make any new lawn orniments. I have a 1993 fox body which runs mid 11;s so I know these cars can be made quick for fairly cheap in comparison. I know these motors like juice ! I am a supercharger guy though but it is obviously gonna cost alot more. Just go with the Zex kit and be done with it :)
