So the other day I blew a rear tire. No, not by way of doing burn outs, but rather by a very large piece of steel shaped like a large animal tooth. So I buy a new tire and rotate the tires so I have even tread wear for the rear axle. Problem... Original owner never rotated tires so the front tread is fantastic and the rear is not so much. So off to buy more tires. I'm wanting to put 285's on the rear but only a handful of companies make 285's for 17 inch wheels so I'm possibly stuck having two different brand performance tires on the car. Is this going to meddle with the car at all? Also, since I'm here...is the C4 able to accommodate a 295 in the rear? 285's look a little close to the mufflers so I dont know how much more room I have to work with.

You didn't say what type of tire you already have on your '90.
Do you have 285 tires all around right now?

The '90 (except the ZR1) came with 17x9.5 wheels and 275/40/17 tires. So, you might want to use the 275 tire instead of the 285. TireRack seems to have plenty of 275 tires available.

I have BFG, G-Force Sport Comp 2's at 275-40ZR17's all the way around on my '90 C4. I love 'em. The stick well in the appropriate weather and she corners like an Indy car. They aren't too noisy either(compared to my former Kuhmo Exsta's). The tires are also reasonably priced and seem to wear well considering they are a softer compound compared to a lot of it's piers. Check out my avitar. You can see reviews and comparisons here. Follow the link. The only tires I'd buy instead would be the Goodyear's or Mich's, but they are much more expensive. I have the Goodyear F1's on my C6 and they are phenomenal. But $$$$$$. Good Luck.

Also, to answer your question about mixing performance tires...I would NOT mix tires from different manufacturers, especially on the same axle. Most of the 275's are directional tires and mixing brands "could" easily cause a "PULL" or wander due to different circumference or compound. A 285 won't show much difference either over a 275 since it's only 10mm wider. About 1/4" at best. Stick with the 275's.

I'm using bfg g-force on the front right now. The rears (after doing a tire rotation)are the original Goodyear factory tires. Sounds like I should just stay with 275's. Thanks for the help. I'll order the bfg's for the rear.

You'll be happy with them... Good Luck.

Add another vote for BFG G-Force tires. Just replaced the tires and rims on my 86, tires were G-Force and so are the new ones. Replaced the old ones because wanted to change the size and the tires were getting fairly old, still usable but old so why risk it.

Yep, and another vote for BFG G-Force tires. Went through three sets in about 130,000 miles. Rode well, handled well and were reasonably priced. Worked well in all road conditions from being a daily driver to playing in the Colorado Rockies I wish they made one that fit my Jag as I'm not that big a fan of the Pirelli's that are currently on it.
