To ABS or to not ABS...?

Gents, My ABS light is on indicating that the ABS is not working. What is the best way to get this checked? Head down to the chevy house and have it placed on the computer? What is the worst case for repair cost…? (any one with past history here?).

And finally, do I really need it? I’ve had the car on an SCCA track and driving it for months without any ABS. The car stops fine, does not swerve etc. I’m an older guy (50), and always have used the pump method anyway, so it is second nature to me when driving and or racing on the track….. any thoughts?

i'm having the same problems....

read this it might help

http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=34659

it *could* be just the wheel sensors have metal flake from the rotors on them. there is a magnet in the sensor. it tricks the ABS thinking the rotor is locked up. there is a black wire running down next to the brake line that runs into the sensor. clean it real good. i used brake cleaner and a rag. i still have the light on though :( so it's got to be something else.

you might get lucky. the ABS is not directly linked to the computer. so regular diagnostic tools won't work. i was told they need the right cartridge to diagnose it. it could only be 3 things.

1. dirty fluid
2. pump sensor
3. actuator sensor

good luck hope this helps!

BTW my brakes are nice and firm and i haven't had any problems either.

Mine comes on occasionally after a hard stop but resets after I turn the ignition on/off. Be very wary about bringing it to a shop and telling them to fix your ABS problem...

Thanks guys, All good info and insight. Also, thanks for the links to the past threads.....

I do have a man that I trust to look at the car, but point taken about just dropping the car off and saying "fix this". Been there before long ago in getting hosed from unsavory repair shops.

The car is sitting now as I am out of the country. I think I'll do some home work next time home on her. A cleaning of the conacts seems simple enough, and a change of break flued seems like common sense anyway.

Thanks for the good ideas...
