Tranny or electrical?

I have an '84 X-fire inj. auto trans, as soon as the car shifts into 3rd the trans starts slipping. 1st and 2nd gear hold strong at any rpm.
Anyone know of this being a common problem?
 
I have been on the forum for a few years, and this seems like something new. I dont think I have heard of this. Try doing some searches in the meantime while you are waiting for an answer. Until then I am sure you will find something. Doesn't seem right to me that the tranny would slip, does it do it under certain types of loads?

The only thing that's electronically controlled on the 84 transmission is the torque converter clutch. If you're slipping in third gear...it's mechanical. Either the clutches are shot or there's a loss of fluid pressure in the third gear circuit. Either way....time for a rebuild or replacement.

Third gear slip

Unfortunately, slipping 3rd gear (or total loss of 3rd) is a common auto trans failure. One cold night, all of a sudden my trans worked flawlessly in 1st and 2nd but totally nothing in 3rd. Drove 35 miles home in 2nd. My repair bill was $1600 but it runs much faster now. I'd cite the broken parts but it's been 2 years and it was a really bad memory.
