Hey guys-
Tell me how you can blow out the 3-4 clutches on a A4 without ruining the 1-2 clutches???

Because the 3-4 clutch pack is subject to a lot more wear than the 1-2 shift band. Think about how much time you spend in 4th compared to 2nd. Also, the gearing in 1st and 2nd reduce the strain on the 1-2 shift band compared to 4th - 2nd gear has what, 2.63 gear reduction, while 4th is .75? Something like that. The gearing causes the transmission to see a lot more stress in 4th than 2nd.

Especially if the fluid level is low, these clutches take most of the abuse.

The 3/4 clutch is a constant fluid flow clutch, which means if the fluid pressure is lost or compromised, the clutch slips.

Also, the clutch can be subject to piston separation and failure which will also burn the clutches.

In dragstrip usage, the housing may actually distort, creating a failure as well.
