When installing the Transmission Output Shaft Seal, is petroleum jelly or light coat of grease required on the Outside Diameter of the Seal? I also understand that a light coat of oil or petroleum jelly is needed for the inside of the seal where the yoke would be?

The old one I pulled out today was used with RTV and it was a nightmare to remove. Should I really use RTV and should I put some grease on the spline before putting the flange back on? What type of grease?

Use RTV or Permatex #2 on the O.D. of the seal (the steel ring) where it mates with the tailhousing so it won't leak there, and use some trans fluid on the I.D. of the seal (and on the yoke) before you re-install the yoke.

John, thanks. I would now like to purchase a new drive shaft yoke to replace the old one that goes into the rear transmission shaft. Can anyone point me to the correct one that I need? What does 31 spline mean? Can't seem to find one specifically for a 79 automatic.
