my 81 has transmission problem just changed the fluid an filter an now i only have reverse it wont go into any drive gears

You say you only have reverse. Does that mean you have reverse regardless of what position the shifter is in, or does it work in R but you have nothing in the other gears?

Check to make sure the shift cable is routed properly and make sure the bracket that holds it to the trans pan rail is in the proper position.

So you have reverse in "R" and nothing in anything else.

Do as Hib suggested and check the mounting bracket.

Another possibility (but kind of unlikely) is that you're low on fluid.

The last time i changed filters on my '82 it took almost a week to get the all of the air out of the system. I'd top it off correctly, drive it (barely because the shifts were very rough), and the next morning it was low. And it wasn't leaking. Finally, the shifts improved and the level stayed full.

Hello, I would check the fluid level again, and also check to make sure the filter was correct or damaged causing low pressure in tranny fluid. Take the filter back off and inspect how you put it on. Some can go on different way and maybe sit too low or in the wrong spot in the pan causing low pressure. A tansmission shop can hook up a pressure gauge and check the tranny out properly. I dont mean to scare you, but I have heard of transmissions slipping after changing fluid when the fluid was extremely overdue for changing or was burnt olmost brown color not red. The last time I changed the fluid in my TH400 it just died... I guess pulling 2 decades worth of dirt out of the system was more than it could handle.
