Check the fluid level first. Maybe a fluid change. Sounds like there may be some restriction in the valve body or a sticking piston in the valve body.

If you have that kind of milage and the trans hasn't been serviced that could be the problem. You could put in a shift kit while you're at it. It won't effect the reverse problem, but its a lot more fun to drive.

Hi:

At 45,000 miles it is prime time for a full transmission service. You can assume its never been done, as changining the auto trans fluid and filter is one of the most neglected maintenance items on any vehicle. An automatic trans utilizes bands and cluthes that are applied and released by hydraulic valves opeening and closing various ports in the valve body. What you are describing sounds like a pressure problem which could be a slow moving or sticking valve coupled with a partially clogged filter that could delay activation of reverse. I highly recommend the most inexpensive approach, first have the trans fluid drained and the filter replaced, if you want to do a thorough job the torque converter must also be drained which may require removal of the transmission. Find a reputable shop that knows vettes...I would personally stay away from national service chains. It a lot cheaper than having to rebuild a fried trans. My 2 cents.

i agree! when i got my vette with 85K i changed mine haveing no idea when it and if it was ever done before. i got a chrome pan with a drain plug for the ease of next time and doing a fuild change in between since dropping the pan and changeing the filter only gets about 4.5 quarts of old stuff out at a time. but i would never do the power flush! anybody else kind of bang into drive from park? i think my front U-joint is going too.
