before the tune up, it was tuned up 17k miles ago with bosch plat +4's new cap and rotor kept the stock wires cause they looked good still. the car was not missing at all at any rpm before or after even up till friday night at the track.

tune up added ac delco rapid fire plugs, cap, rotor, 8 mm wires and accel super coil picked up over 4 mph sunday in the afternoon at 85 degrees compared to friday nights runs at 75 degrees!

took her to the track friday and hit the best of the fri night test and tune of 14.42 with a 2.12 60' at 92 mph with over 210 water temp. temp was around 75 degrees friday night. i was barely spinning the tires at 42 psi.

i gave her the tune up sat afternoon.

sunday i hit a best of 14.57 in the heat at 225 water temp with a 2.07 60'. i picked up 4 mph in my last run of 14.62 @ 97 mph with a tire spinning thru 1st gear into second with a 2.29 60'. air temp was 85 degrees. psi was set at 28 and i still was spinning thru halfway if not all the way thru 1st gear!

i think if i can get her cooled down to 150 degrees and staged at 160 - 165 degrees with good cool air and low 1.9 to a low 2.0 60' she'll hit a 13.8 or 13.9 if i can run the mph it showed in sundays run. one of my runs sunday was 14.70 @ 85 mph dialed in on a 14.69. i think if i would of stayed in that run it would of been a 14.20 or so at around 98 mph.

she's all stock except maf descreened, k&n filter, cut air box, air foil, and no mufflers. stock rear Y and stock front Y pipes.

damn 2.59 gear is killing me

i did make it to the semi's and damn red lighted. 2nd year in a row at the corvette shoot out i made the semi's.

moral of the story, i thought the bosch plat +4's were a good plug and i think they are but after a few 1000 miles they just crud up. they were brownish black. i know the car runs rich and i got an adjustable fuel pressure regulator a friend at the track gave me. i think if i can tune the fuel pressure to be a bit more lean that as rich as it is she'll run better. also got a 160 thermastat i have to put in this week before fridays test and tune again :D

i actually can't wait for late oct early nov when day time temps are in the 60's and night time temps dip in the high 40's with low humidity we have in late fall here in MD :D

my friend showed me timeslips from a stock TPI with a few minor bolt ons and exhaust mods.

89 stock motor TPI Vette: 13.17 at 103.79mph
just thought you fbody guys might be a little interested in what us Vette guys are doing with the old L98s these days. with minor bolt ons (and i do mean minor) i ran my best E/T last night at Cecil County dragway: 13.17 at 103.79mph w 1.77 60ft.

almost everything on the car is stock: the entire TPI intake, exhaust manifolds, heads, cam, gears, trans, air intake. the only mods i have are: K&N filter, airfoil, AFPR, Exotic Muscle front ypipe, Borla rear ypipe, S10 stall converter, drag radials, and some of the free mods. the car has no weight reduction, and its an auto with 3.07 gears.

my goal is to hit 12.99 with the stock TPI intake setup. no aftermarket base or runners. with the colder air coming, and some more tuning, i think its possible

here is the post over at www.thirdgen.org and yes i seen the timeslips!

Mic,

Back in the day I used to own the 85 Vette, that I now own again (how weird is that?), I ran it regular at the strip. With the stock L98 manifold and 383 cubes, the best I could squeeze was right at 13 flat around 105 mph. The 60' and 1/8 mile were great, but it fell off like a rock.

When I put the miniram motor together on my 90...WHOA! What a difference in upper end performance.

Back at the track with that car (I only ran it a few times), my 1/8 mile and 60' were poor (clutch, tire, and driver error), but it really picked up in the remainder of the track.

The new owner just ran it in the 1/8, and shaved it down to a 8 second flat...but was smoking his tires all the way (I since had put the 3.75 gears).

What does all this mean? I have no idea!

I guess I have just had bad luck with the L98.

However....we had a buddy here years ago with a 85 IROC that ran the guts out of the car (305). He eventually got that car in the 12's with the TPI intake---as there was nothing else available anyway...but he did it with a 406 under it.

I think the air flow dynamics are against you no matter what. Your F body buddy is having some great success though...so, I guess 12s are possible.

yeah i'm just doing the exhaust mods and the free stuff while tweeking it some till i can scrape together the money to get the ZZ406 cam new roller rockers and roller lifters. already got the edlebrock big mouth lower intake, slp runners, and another plenum all ported. just need the above and a 52 mm tb.

my friend with the 13.1 vette says he's been following a guy on the corvetteforums that has his stock motor stock tpi running 12.8's :eek! i guess it is possible looking at his timeslips but i don't think i'll see that with mine. maybe if i'm lucky a mid 13 at best until i swap out and get her going. i'd be happy to get 12's out of what i am doing with all the mods.

BTW i added the 160* tstat yesterday. i might swap the intake out in a month or so just to see what happens and do the cam and heads at a later time in the winter.
