hello. today I started to change all my light bulbs in the front signal and parking lights and when I took the female bulb sockets apart they were packed with what looks like clay or plumbers puddy. what is this stuff? I need to clean them off so they work and wanted to know if I should even repack them when I reassemble.

It look to me that it was some connector oil or something like that and after 30 years it looks like clay. I removed everything and used some new connector oil no problem :)

Greetings Peter

It's a dielectric grease. Keeps the moisture out of the connectors. The stuff GM used was sort of colored yellow, but clear works just as well.

thanks for the info. that was what I thought too but when I reassembled them I only coated the metal parts. the entire cap was packed full when i took them apart. easy enough to fill them if need to though.

On the assembly line it was a quick slop it in and stick in the bulb deal. Accuracy and neatness were not an issue. It could be that they figured that if the socket was full of grease no water could get in.
