I have a 66 327/350 coupe. The rear U joint rubbed the floor on hard acceleration. I replaced the diff. rubber donut with a poly donut. It rubbed even more. I put spacers in the poly donut and it helped some.

Do I need to shim up the floor with wedges between the frame and the floor or shim the donut more? I ask about the floor because it rubs more with weight in the passenger seat.

Is this a common problem?

It may seem silly but ilook at picure of how its supposed to be installed (most suppliers have a picture in there catolouge )when I purchased my car, mine was incorrect.

Next thing I would check is the plate that the custion mounts to.Its supposed to have 2 bolts in it are they both there? are they tight?

How do the body mounts look in that area? (there just before the rear tire opening)

Good Luck

Hogbrains -
I had the same problem. The rear end felt sloppy and I noticed that the rubber cushion was split. When I popped the old one out it was obvious that the old was non-stock as it was much fatter than the replacement. Upon installing the replacement, my the rear end og the driveshaft hit the body.

Someone had obviously had this issue before (hence the fatter cushion) so I simply added a stack of washers and torqued down to spec. Problem solved.

There are several factors that can cause this

1. Body sag
2. Smashed body mounts
3. Differential bracket loose ('63 style did not have reinforced holes for the two bolts - they become egg shaped)

In my case, I have '63 carrier bracket where somone has welded on reinforcement washers AND I have some sloppy fiberglass repairs tight above the u-joint.

Anyway, if you can live with the bubba-factor, try some washers:
