It has been a LONG time since I bought tires of this nature - I am at a loss for what is out there and good -
I REALLY liked my BFGoodrich Comp TA ZR's from the mid - late 90's however, I think they changed the designators on their tires and call 'em something else :confused
I am not looking for BFG TA R1 race tire - they chew up your paint quickly on the street!

ALSO, what about Run-Flat technology - does anyone besides Goodyear make an EMT or run-flat in 275-40-17 or 285-40-17??

Thanks in advance for any imput - good or bad on the tires :v :m

It's not possible to recommend a tire without knowing the intended use of the cars.

Goodyear is the only one to make EMTs in the C4 sizes and it maybe that GS-C EMTs have been discontinued. I'd check with a Goodyear dealer on that.

Hib - Callaway Corvettes - looking for tires that meet the original equipment standards, or exceed however, I am not looking for a race tire - just a good street tire :m

Car is driven in a spirited fashion, sometimes at speed ;)

I imagine wet weather driving is pretty unlikely, but most ultra-high-performance tires are exceptional in rain. You could get some DOT-legal tires if you want to give up the rain performance for slightly more dry grip.

The latest from Goodyear is the Eagle F1 and F1 GS, which is standard on the C5 Corvette. The F1 GS in Callaway size is only a W-rated tire, though, making it good to 168 mph. The F1 in Callaway size is a Y-rated tires, making it good to 186 mph. The F1 seems to be the better tire, though the F1 GS is more expensive. I've no idea what the story is on that. Actually, it seems the Goodyear website sucks. Tirerack has F1 Supercar tires also in a Y-rating. It seems that Goodyear likes to make it's tire lineup very confusing with numerous tires called "F1". Apparently the original F1 was for the McLaren F1, and the F1 Fiorano came out on the Ferrari F50. The F1 Supercar is standard on the Z06 and Shelby Series 1.

Michelin, which the Corvette Racing team switched to for this season, would probably be the Pilot Sport, which is their new max-performance tire (used to be the MXX3). It is a Y-rated tire. I like that Michelin includes on their website how to adjust the tire for speed. To safely do 186 with the Pilot Sport, you need to add an additional 7.5 psi to the tire, and be at no more than 85% of the tires maximum weight rating. It's a 98Y tire, so the max weight rating per tire is 1653 lbs, 85% of which is 1,405 lbs per tire (I'm sure the Callaway is nowhere close. Heck, the Aurora rides on 98H tires).

BFGoodrich makes a g-force T/A KD tire that is more of a street tire than the R1. It also is Y-rated.

Then there are probably a million other tires from the various different makers. I personally would go with a Goodyear or Michelin, but that's just preference, nothing to back that up. :)

P.S. Dunlop makes runflat tires under the "DSST" moniker. But I'm not sure any are in the 275/40-17 size.

Z rated tires used to mean 149+ mph. However, whether that meant safety at 160 mph, 180 mph, 200mph, all depended on the tire and manufacturer. Now, there are additional ratings of W and Y to help give a better idea of how far above 149 you can go. There is also (xxY) in parens like (98Y), that apparently means 186+ mph, again, how far over? Who knows.

I think if you plan on going over 160mph, I would make sure to get all the info you can on a particular tire and plan ahead with pressures, load, etc. I wouldn't just on a whim punch it up to 180mph on the street. ;)

I've used the Goodyear F1 GS-D3 on my 95. They replaced the OE GS-Cs and were an excellent upgrade, especially in wet weather. They're not a race tire by any means but an excellent, all-round, ultra-performance radial.

BTW, CAC's knowlege base has articles about both the F1 GS-D3 and the F1 Supercar.

I *think* the F1 GS-D3 is the one just called "F1" on Goodyear's site. It seems to be a W-rated tire when in the 275/40-17 size, though it is in Y-ratings in some other sizes. A W-rating is 168 mph, vs the 186 mph of a Y-rated, if that matters to you Chris. If it does, um, can you let me know when and where it's going to "matter" to you? ;) :D

it DOES matter to me, as I do not think a tire that isn't up to the "capabilities" should be put on the car - you never know when it might "matter" :upthumbs :bu

Chris ,as you know Callaway's long time choice are Perilli PZero Assimetricos.(They are the C12's tire)They put them on my CR1 & C8 & I am very impressed with there overall performance.Much better than the BFG's on the C9 & the Goodyears on the B2K.JMO :upthumbs If you can wait until Dec. you can test drive them all & get a direct comparison.

I can wait I think - I was talking tires W/ Mike Z. and we agreed that Bridgestone (tires) should be on the runflat wheels - I want to replace the 285/40/17's as they seem a bit too "large looking" - want a 275/40/17 back on them

I also am looking for a set of tires to replace the original (dry) Gatorbacks on the B2K - 15 year old tires :eek

It has been awhile since I bought tires like these - mostly buying SUV tires and for my 'lil daily driver (weather beater)

I would be more than willing to drive all your cars - Thanks for the offer :m

What's the use of the car in this instance??

TRAILER! GARAGE! TRAILER!

spirited driving = to and from cruise nights at 50mph! :L

Chris, everything Ive heard about the F1 GS-D3s says that they are definitely the tire to buy. :beer

:_rock And the 285 works fine on a Dymag as it's about 10" wide. Ask me how I know. :D

So 90Callaway, Callaway4Fun, and Kruzmisl all are using the D3's, hmm... Sounds like a popular choice :cool

Has anyone looked into these?? and how they compare to the tire shown above...

GoodYear F1 Supercar tire

Tony, I could not find any Pirelli "Summer tires" in 275/40/17's, only a M&S (all season tire)

but did see these in 285/40/17's w/ a "YR" speed rating

Thanks for the imput guy's :v :m

I like the Goodyear F1 SuperCar for dry aggressive driving and the F1 D3 for wet and dry driving. The SuperCar tire sticks like glue. Of course they start with just about half the tread depth as a D3 :crazy

Turbo Joe, What tires did you mount on your Dymags last month??
Thanks - CC.

The F1 Supercar 275\40\17's. They are the closest to the original (Goodyears best performance tire). I chose that tire and size because I want to stay in a stock class when I autocrosse (only high speed autocrosses on regular road courses like Summit Point) I enter the 1FS NCCC class so I can play with the ZR-1's. I offically should be classified as 1ES but that wouldn't be fair to the L98 guy's so I give up a few pony's to the ZR-1's and have lot's of fun. :D
