Undercoating flaking off the mufflers

:confused has anyone noticed the undercoating flaking off the mufflers (on the bottom)to the right and the left of the exhaust pipes. It is a little unsightly as you can see the aluminum of the exhaust through the slits in the rear bumper....Can I buy a can of black undercoatong and respray it?????? Or is that a BAD IDEA!

Thanks

Yes, i took mine into a dealership (still under warrenty) and they replaced it, said it was common.

There is actually a TSB regarding this:

For some reason, GM is in denial, and think this only exists on 1993-1998 models. That area of the mufflers (on C5s anyway) is right in the path of anything getting kicked up by the tires (not to mention the constant heating/cooling cycles), so I think that damage to the painted surface is unavoidable. That's why most aftermarket mufflers are uncoated stainless steel.

Paint job

I had the same problem, and used a can of high temp spray paint, used a small paint roller, sprayed the paint directly onto the roller laying in a paint tray(pointed away from the car), and reached under the car and rolled the paint on. So far it is staying put.
