It seems to me that a drop is a good way of shutting the hood with just the right amount of even force (provided you hold it at the center and drop from the right height). If you "close" it, where do you push and how do you ensure that you have even force on both sides.

As for the deck lid, it is a little scary to think of it opening. Mine does apear to close firmly.
 
If you "drop" it closed, you're asking for spider cracks in the panel (and in the paint); it's a better idea to let it down until it sits on the latches, then just "push" each side down with the palm of your hand until it latches.
