1982 Vehicle speed sensor

Can you tell me which colored wires connect to the yellow box? And where are they located on the wire harness?

Huh?

Readers ride, you have to explain a bit more your problem, and you have to remember that no one is in here 24/7 and knows how to answer your question. If you are like most Vette enthusiasts, you probably cannot work on your Vette until the weekend, or at maximum an hour at night during the work week.

I recommend you post your question at least by a Wednesday night, so that way you can yield maximum feedback on your Vette issue. There are many knowledgeable folks in here, but describing something as a,"yellow box", will yield mostly dumb looks from us. :)

Take your time, and be as descriptive as possible. Most of us wish to help, but don't want to misguide by presuming your problem. :thumb:

I guess you mean the speed sensor buffer (All the ones I've seen are yellow). If that's the case you should be looking for pink/black, black/white, and brown wires. Can't help with where they would be. Shouldn't be too far from the speedo though.

But Gerry is right try to give better descriptions, or at least post a photo if you're really unsure.

I have attached a picture showing the vehicle speed sensor. In order to clear out a code 24, I need to know where the box (shown in blue) attaches to wire harness.

You are right its the speed sensor buffer. I did send a picture of it but mind is blue
not yellow I didn't know it until I took the cluster out and found it unplug from the harness. I thought it was yellow cause everybody kept telling it was yellow. On 1982 models it was blue what Ive been told.

It is in the console somewhere. I want to say between the shifter and the ashtray. I have been looking for an image I have somewhere. The damn thing was on the way when I was swapping the shifter's cut out for an over drive TH200-4r

I would very much want to look at the image if you can find it. I thank you for pointing it out for me. I wouldn't have guessed it be near the shifter and the ashtray.
Thanks for your help.

The only wire I found was a brown wire next to the lighter it has a terminal on I wonder if this plugs into another wire before it plugs to the speed sensor? I tried looking for the pink/black and black/white and brown wire but I didn't find them . I even peel back some wrapping to try to located them and I didn't find them ?

Readers, I just noticed that you have a 1982 Vette. Mine is 1981, so perhaps that changed the location for VSS. (I was going to mention that manual transmission 81 Vettes don't have VSS, and that's when I noticed you have an 82). :)

As Gerry says my vette doesn't have this sensor so can't even look for it on mine even though the interior is partly removed.

Had a look for around at where others say to look on an 82. Could try looking up from under the steering column. if you can't see it there found somewhere else that said the connector enters the speedo housing with all the others for the tach etc.
Hope this helps and i'm not sending you on a wild goose chase.
(I have a wiring diagram for an 82 so the colors i gave you should be correct)

You say here that it was in your way when you were swapping out the shifters cut out. By any chance do you remember what it was plug into?

I to have the wiring diagram and it also shows those color wires. And in my diagram it show to be in the center console close to the ashtray and shifter but I haven't located them there. I have a friend that also has a 81 corvette with an automatic transmission 700R4 just like mine and he also has the same problem as mine we even look under the dash and the center console and haven't found it yet it was much easy on his cause his vette has no interior in it he is also restoring his?

There are two plugs near the ash tray, that "Y" to the left of ash tray. Except that the one that connects to the VSS, is closer (and therefore a longer lenght of wire) that reaches closer to the left side of radio.

So one leg of "Y" connects to diagnostic check connector. There is also another connector at the computer connector which piggy backs on the computer connector.

The VSS really is just needed to let the computer know when to activate/deactivate the lock up clutch. The computer takes the speed input, and determines if you are applying brakes or coasting, and it either locks-up or unlocks the torque converter. It also helps on emission control when determining when to activate the EGR.

Hey, why don't you post a picture of what you are working with and what the problem is? :)

Which interior parts did you remove in your search for the vss? If I were you I would remove both side panels at the centerconsole and also the top panel of the center console. Remove steeringwheel and unbolt the speedo gaugecluster. Slide the gaugecluster forward so you can reach behind it with your hand (maybe you need to unlock the speedocable before you can pull it forward). With your hand you can look for the 2 or 3 wired cable that is coming from your speedo. If it isn't there then that is the problem. If there is a 2 wired cable, try to pull it slightly and look at the ashtray area if you see something moving. The vss is a really big piece so it should be easy to find. It could also be that the vss is not near the ashtray but more next to the radio under the dash. Get yourself into the backbreaking position upside down in the car in front of the seat and see if you can see something under the dash. If the vss really is gone then look for the connector that goes on the missing vss so you know were to connected your new vss to. I think Gerry explained how to find the connector. :)

Greetings Peter
