I recently purchase a 1986 corvette. The previous owner told me he had bypassed the Vats in the Column. since I have owned it the security light has always been flashing until it is started. I am still trying to figure out the ins and outs of this car so I took that as normal. Today I locked the car from the passenger electric door lock. When I went to unlock the drivers door later the alarm started going off. I disconnected the horn to not disturb the neighbors. I can hear in the dash a timer ticking or something. When it stops ticking everything is fine. Because the ignition switch portion is bypassed the car still starts just fine. I no longer have a security light on in the dash since this started. Apparently locking the passenger door with the electric door lock and unlocking the driver side with the key has disrupted something in the system. How would you start to troubleshoot? Are there wires that go to door locks sensors? I feel really stupid about not knowing this stuff. Guess you can tell I am not a professional car thief? I eventually want to put the whole VATS system back to original. I just have other priority that need to be addressed first.

Thanks in advance
Jay

Inserting the door key and unlocking didn't turn the alarm off?

Have a msg on my phone from when I first got my 89 and the alarm went off on my wife and she didn't know how to turn it off. 5 minutes of screaming and cussing with cars honking at her as she drove home with the alarm going off. I was on the golf course and my 4some had a great laugh listening to it. 10 years later and she still hasn't lived that down.

Normal operation of the Security Light.

Open either door the Security Light blinks.

Both doors closed Security Light is out.

With boot doors closed, insert key and turn ignition to run, the Security light should be out.
If it's on solid the key pellet wasn't read properly and the starter won't engage. You must wait around 5 minutes for the lock out period to time out before trying again.

With either door open, the Security Light Blinks.
If you use the power door locks to lock the doors, the Security Light goes solid.
When you close the doors, the Alarm is set.
To disarm the Alarm you use the door key to unlock either door which also disables the alarm.
Since the driver side door did not disable the alarm, the switch mounted on the back of the door key cylinder is not working. It sends a ground signal to the Alarm module to disable the alarm.

If you don't want to set the alarm you need to manually lock the doors using the slider switch.

The alarm only sounds the horn and does nothing else. The alarm is triggered by the two door switches or the hatch ajar switch.

Item 205 is the switch.

Thanks for the explanation. Now I understand at least the door portion of it. I guess I start a new Ecklers parts list today. Just sent one order in last night
