I got my 85 Corvette appraised last Saturday, and the appraiser asked if I had any history on it. I have seen several articles on how unreliable CarFax is and was wondering if there are any other ways of getting the history. I can't get it from the owner, since I bought it from a clearing house for trade ins and they couldn't tell me any of the history or who the owner was. I was going to get it from CarFax, but before I do, I thought I'd check to see what others experiences have been with CarFax and if this is the best route to take before spending the money. Thanks for any help or advice on this subject.

CarFax is an OK start, but not 100% reliable. It won't tell you about private sales. If you want the history, you can contact your local motor vehicle agency and have a title search done for a fee.

Hope this helps some.

mdsbch,
Chrisr mentioned the local motor vehicle agency, this is the best place to start.

If you’re interested in building information on your ’85, you can obtain a copy of your 85’s window sticker and build sheet through the National Corvette Museum http://www.corvettemuseum.com/

Under NCM Exclusives, in the first box, go to Build Sheets, you will be given more info there, all prices are listed. You can also order a copy of the ’85s sales brochure.

I traced mine through DMV (of multiple states, each with their own fee) via title reports etc to the day it was first sold in Jackson, Mississippi. Took some time but was kind of like I was a PI.

Here's a Corvette wave to you and your '76 from its home state! Haven't thought about using the DMV to learn more of my car's history, thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to check 3 states... mine originally sold in New Mexico and I purchased it from a dealership in Texas.
