I copied this off the ZR-1 Net. Pretty cool video. Put on the headphones, turn up the volume, sit back and relax. :D

From Andy Denslow:

I know its all driver in this case; but its still fun to watch and
needle with. The Z06 driver belonged in the green run group the way he was driving. I passed him twice in 1 20 minute session. The video is ~15 mb and a little less than 20 minutes long. PS - The Z06 is black.

There was 1 other (an '03) Z06 in my run group, he was running 2:08 & 9s w/o traffic; I was running 2:04s & 5s w/o traffic. His was red. You never see him in the video as he started right behind me.

If you want the cliff notes version w/ only my best lap on it here it
is (no Z06es get passed, though :( ): http://cf.denslow.net/videos/zr1tws1lap113002100kbps.asf

pretty cool... he closed on the z06 like it was standing still... then just TOASTED it! (I'm talking about the pass at approx. the 17 minute mark)

Not to be a spoilsport, but it only means something if you want it to.

He was waved by, you can see it in the video. The other guy was inexperienced, and appears to have an instructor in the passenger's seat.

I suspect the Z guy was trying to let him by on the previous straight (where you'd normally do it), but misjudged it and didn't allow enough time. That's why the distance closed so rapidly.

I notice he didn't comment on his difficult overtaking other cars like the Porsche. A bit of racer's ego, I'm afraid, and not revealing about the cars or much else.

I didn't say it did mean anything :) And I did say it was all driver in that case. However, I was the fastest car in my run group, and that included a Z06 whose driver had been to 50% more events than I had.

As for being waved by, that's how these driver's education events work. You're only allowed to pass in passing zones and only when the driver being passed signals. It's done to prevent paint swapping.

The whole scenario makes it harder to pass someone in general. Instead of taking a better line through the curves and then slingshoting by on the straight you have to ride the guy's butt for a little while so he knows you're there and ready to pass. Riding his tail slows you down, so when you do go to pass it's more like a drag race than road racing.

PS - I sent the original writeup to a ZR-1 list. As a group we're a little sensitive about the Z06 crowd (in general, not all are uninformed) saying our cars suck. I would've been more polite if I had posted on a Z06 board, probably would not have mentioned passing the Z06 at all.

PPS - This video DOES PROVE that all of those dolts who think they can go buy the fastest car available and suddenly be a race car driver are full of it :D

Nice ride and the motor sounded up to the task and loved to Run!

Thanks

Anybody, Z owner or otherwise, who doesn't get ZR-1's either hasn't been paying attention or has a personal agenda. They're great cars, and without them it's unlikely there would have been a Z.

Anytime you have cars of varying capabilities or drivers of different skill levels on the same track at the same time, it's a recipe for disaster.

Everything else being the same, it's always been about the driver-and the driver's weight. But by the same token, it's not a foot race, and things rarely are the same: even if the cars look alike.

Have fun, and be careful out there.

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

Some info on that Porsche for you. Earlier in the day (my first time out in 6 months) we played "swap the lead" about 8 times in one session. Whomever was behind seemed to be faster. First time I've ever had a Porsche hang with me. I went and found the guy and asked him about the car. It was a bone stock Carrera 4. Only 320 HP but all wheel drive. That car came out of the corners like no ones business. It was sweet!

The section in the video above he was on his warmup lap (they take about 4-5 minutes letting all the cars go to spread them out) and there is no passing allowed on a warmup lap. Technically I was not on my warmup lap so I could've passed him but since he was on his warmup lap he couldn't let me. And I couldn't pass w/o a signal from him. Make any sense? :)

PS - The outfit I run with (Motorsports Club at Texas World Speedway www.texasworldspeedway.com) has never had any car on car contact, they run a pretty good setup for those of us who want to drive hard w/o too much risk to the car.
