On a C5 driver do you keep the old exhaust when replacing it with a cat-back system?

I tossed mine for a couple of reasons. First, it looked like heck - black paint flaking all over the mufflers and tips were scratched up. Second, I replaced it in my garage so I had to cut the over-axle pipes, making it pretty much useless. Mine is a driver and I'm racking up the miles so it's probably never going to be a collectible car, especially when you consider how many C5s were built.

Plus there's the issue of having to store a bulky uncut exhaust. If for some reason I decide to go back to stock (not happening:D) I'll buy a used set.

So which exhaust systems are you considering?

I think that I would save any Corvette part. That said, I think it may be a good idea to put some (small amount) light oil on some rags and put them into each end of the (stored) exhaust. This will keep the rust down, especially in the muffler internals. Is this a good idea??
I have had some car parts stored that rusted quite a bit.

Thanks for all the responses so far. I just hate to throw away parts, only to regret it later. Just wanted to see how others felt.

Depends on how much storage room and money you have. ;)

As an example, today as my kid was driving, there was a bright red plastic "drink cup" in our lane .... and I said ... "no factor" ... and boy what a racket it made. It was either a flashlight or an insulated drink cup.

Keep in mind, our cars are pretty low and prone to exhaust damage; I hit a dog with my 65' and took out one side some years back.

My point is, is that if you have the room why not ..... especially if it will hurt your wallet if you have to replace it.

I sold my stock exhaust for $200 to a guy on the net who had his stock exhaust damaged by a tow truck driver taking the Vette off a flat bed. If you put it on the net it will sell. People look for stock parts to fix wrecks all the time.

i would keep it, I changed my stock to a Z06 titanium set up whch really wasnt any louder, held on the the stock in case I ever had a problem. A year later a friend of mines uncle bought a C5 with a Corsa exhaust that he thought was too loud, asked if I had the stock ones still and traded them for my stock. So now I have a corsa muffler set up was able to sell the Z06 mufflers at a profit and its all because I kept the lousy stock mufflers. Moral of the story always hold on to whatever parts you can.

I have all my origional parts, because I wanted to and I have the room.:thumb

Forkliftman79, that is pretty much what I originally was thinking. I just hate to be a pack-rat. In the case of Corvettes, pack-rat it is!!
