Weather Strip Replacement ???

1. Remove the hatch supports from cargo area and support with a board (I used a 1x2)
2. Remove the rear deck trim (3pcs)
3. Remove old weather strip
4. Clean all old goo, adhesive, and dirt(this took the most time and I used various solvents lacquer thinner and a product called goo be gone worked the best, just be careful not to damage the paint)
5. While you are doing the above let the new weather strip get nice and warm in the sun(this will aid in the softening of the strip for installation)
6. Install the new strip (I found it best to start at a corner and run it along the top of the header to the opposite corner and then around the rear of the hatch)
7. Reinstall the deck trim and hatch supports( the deck trim holds the weather strip in place and I'm told no adhesive is needed on this piece. I didn't uses any adhesive and the weather strip is firmly in place)
8. Clean and remove all finger prints from car!;)

Good Luck, it really isn't that hard! Let me know how it goes.

I did the windshield last night. It took about four hours total. It took an hour to remove the top, interior trim, sunvisors, and the old weatherstripping. Then it took two hours to remove all of the old adhesive, clean up the metal trim clips along either side of the windshield, and clean up the rust that had built up at the corners because of the leakage.

The major leak on the passenger side was not from the weatherstrip, but rather between the metal clip that holds the weatherstrip and the windshield support. Bubba had this piece off at some time, and only put it back on with two screws and then they weren't even tight. I used 5 screws, double sided tape, weatherstrip adhesive and small amount of silicone. They won't ever leak again.

Installing the weatherstrip itself took less than an hour and I used no adhesive except at the very end where the corner of the door meets the windshield. The fit was very good. It looks nice, but I didn't get the top back on so I still have to check for leaks. I don't think there will be a problem.

I just had all my weather stripping replaced. Got mine from Eckler's. The guy that replaced my windshield put it all in for an extra 50 bucks. So far so good. Though I was thinking of getting that weather stripping conditioner to help protect it since I don't have a garage for the Summer. Any comments on this??

Debbie :)

btbm2, thanks for the steps on replacing the weatherstripping. I just replaced it on my rear hatch, about 30 minutes start to finish. I was lucky, I had very little mess to clean up from the old one. I suppose there is an advantage to keeping one garaged. :BOW

Debbie, I use dielectric silcone grease on my weatherstrip to condition it. I believe this is the same as some of the weatherstrip conditioners that are sold for a higher price. You can buy this at a autoparts store for a few bucks. Just smear it on and wipe off the excess. Its the same stuff you use on sparkplug wire boots.
