Can anyone explain to me how your car runs when the carb well plugs are leaking? My car runs fine for the most part, maybe just a bit rough after it warms up. Sometimes after I have driven it, when I start it up the following morning it runs very rough and smokes for a few minutes and then it smooths out and runs fine.

:w Tim,

I am by NO MEANS even close to an expert when it comes to the engine, I can't even talk a good engine overall ;)

My 81 did what you describe, and it ended up being the electric choke was messed up. I took a BIG water pump pliers to the adjustment and it would work for a while then same old thing.

I ended up getting the whole guad rebuilt and haven't looked back, and RARE runs like new :dance

I have the GM Shop Manual (ST-364-81) and tried to follow the proceedure but like I said, when I get around an engine I don't trust myself to do much more than change spark plugs or maybe the alternator or power steering pump ;)

Good Luck

Bud

Well plugs can leak fuel into the intake manifold causing a rich condition. From your post if it runs rough cold for only a few minutes and then smooths out and runs good warm, I would be looking at the choke pull off for operation and/or adjustment.

I agree. Also, well plug leaks are more common in earlier Q-jets. By the time of the E4ME, most of the bugs were worked out. If you do have a significant well plug leak, you can smell gas on your dipstick.

God bless, Sensei
