I know, I know... This is the the ultimate stupid question of all times :L .

But what does the terminology "core charge / core price" mean? I come across this at part distributors such as Ecklers and others.

Please explain by giving an example if you don't mind...

Cheers,

Selim

Core Charge

You send back the original part from your car and you get the Core Charge back.

When I replaced the seat track in my 96 LT4 I sent back the original seat track to them and they refunded/credited my Core Charge.

It is a fee placed on a part that can normally be rebuilt to be resold later. You get the replacement part for cost + core charge. You send your old part back, if it is rebuildable you will get your core charge returned to you. It is like a deposit.

Another common part with a core charge is brake calipers. You buy them for an amount + core charge (deposit). You replace the calipers on your car, send the old calipers back to the supplier and your core charge (deposit) is returned to you.

PS: It's not a stupid question if you don't know the answer.

Thanks to all of you folks... You are all great people.

Cheers,

Selim

Yep, basically what everyone else said. Kind of like some cities where they have the recycling programs for pop cans and glass bottles.

What are you looking to get, Selim?

All the previous posts are correct. A point of interest on cores however is that the total sale including the core is charged and also taxed.

Example,

Corvette stainless caliper................ $75.00
Core charge on caliper..................... 50.00
Total.......................................... 125.00
Tax, Michigan is 6%.......................... 7.50
Final total.................................. $132.50

Now heres the kicker to this example. When you return the core, they keep the sales tax, it`s not refunded to you. I had noticed on a previous thread that the customer was "hot" over the none refundable sales tax on the core which would have been $3.00. We get many complaints over cores, but sorry it`s the Law.:upthumbs

And then they most often will tell you it`s not rebuildable and even keep the core charge too. These places make money off the cores and its nearly clear profit as they buy scrap yard cores for about $3.00 a piece. Another trick to keep your money is to tell you your core is incorrect. Starters and alternators fall victim to this scam all the time.;)

Now you know there nasty little secrets on cores.:L

here in Iowa when I buy parts and return the core I get sales tax credit.
In some states it may not be refundable.

I just wanted to learn what core charge means & how it works buddy, nothing in mind :) .

Cheers,

Selim

I did miss one point about cores, You may always tell if it`s a new product your purchasing as NO core is necessary, normally only rebuilts or remans would ever require a core or exchange. :D

This forum site is like an encyclopedia... Thanks folks.

I just purchased new Galaxy Glass t tops for my '79 Greenwood and they tried to charge me a core charge. I balked at that company and bought them from another. So, another example is rebuildable T-Tops for us 68-82 folks.
