Emissions compliance, extra power, or??? ;shrug

What I am getting at, is all the time I read how car XXXX has more power than your XXXX, so what if it is not emissions compliant :ugh

So would you rather have 15-20 extra horsepower, or a car that is emissions compliant. This of course assumes that the modifications some claim, actually upped the power ;squint:

Please click the poll - and feel free to write your reasons/response as well :beer

:eyeroleI would take the power, i guess the way things like gas prices and such are going .plus even when they are a little dirty they are pretty clean .being an older (55) hotrodder ,i love the power . that may sound selfish, but it is truthfull.plus our county is the only one that doesnt have to test our cars except for when you buy or sell it.

:mad Why can't I click on option #3?

Left it out huh??

Option #3 should read... Both of the above :D

Why can't we have both?

:soapbox

Option #3 requires additional cost. I say that Callaway as an Engineering company already does both while AMTs (not the tax... but After Market Tuners) only offer option 1.

That is one of the differences between Callaway and the other guys and thus it reflects on the car's residual value which is why Callaway Cars hold their value as compared to similar AMT attempts.

Plus they offer optional parts that work together as a system (Suspension, Wheels, Exhaust, Brakes, Interiors, Exteriors, etc etc) and look like they belong rather than the Frankenstein Bolt job that most of the other guys do.

Done, if anyone would like to change their vote to #3, please post and I will make it happen :beer

Well, I figured I'd vote my dollar. I wouldn't care if, nor pay to have, the car met CARB requirements or passed new car emissions standards. Though I do care if it passes VA's req's since I have to register the car, and have paid extra to retain original emissions components. If emissions tests weren't required, I wouldn't care about them either, though I'd still likely keep cats on the car.

Aurora,

I have voted with my wallet before as well but I have learned that in the long run it works out better when you vote for better quality. I believe in this case increased performance with Emissions compliance which leads the car to qualify for NADA valuation and peer respect in the industry and thus preserves the value of the car.

Trade in a car put together by most AMTs and you won't get a dime on the dollar.

Granted sometimes it puts it out of reach for some but for example a SC Callaway C6 with an incremental price of $18K over the stock C6 is fully Callaway documented, emmissions compliant, and has the performance at the mid point between a Z06 and a 2009 ZR1. It will retain its value as compared the to work most other shops would do for less price.

Just my $0.02 worth.

More power, damn the emissions!

I hate the environment!!! (Kidding)

Option 3!

Also option 3 is was sets Callaway apart from all the other tuners. I think tuning without looking at emissions is the easy way out! Overhearer in Holland all cars has to get to a minimum on emissions, and from 92 and up the younger the car the tighter the emissions have to be. Like Luigi says with a little more effort you can also get HP out of a emissions legal car, you just need to dig a little deeper into your cash box.

Peter, that is one of the hurdles that Callaway Cars has constantly cleared - making power, reliably, while passing the FEDERAL Emissions standard and in many cases, California emissions as well.

In an interview I held with Reeves and Peter Callaway last spring, they hoped the playing field would level, as surely one can get more power w/ out concerns of emissions. A much bigger cam, straight exhaust with relocated or no catalytic convertors, etc.

On another board, someone claimed 49hp over a Callaway SC580 car by going with a centrifugal blower. Well, #1, is it CALIFORNIA LEGAL to begin with? Doubtful... ;shrug

And then it was stated it had long tube headers - more than likely, that is where the extra power came from, although it could also be argued the car might have a non-disclosed, smaller pulley. The smaller pulley, which a Callaway could ALSO be fitted with, creates more boost. But the pulley the SC580 car comes with, allows Callaway Cars to also offer a POWERTRAIN warranty, something else the others are not, and probably CANNOT do :w

I say, level the playing field :beer

Meeting emissions standards doesn't necessarily have any relation to quality. For example, Corvette Racing does not use retaining emissions compliance as a way to increase the reliability of their cars, nor to increase performance. Yet I wouldn't call the C6-R some hack job.

Not to mention "emissions compliance" is a fairly loaded term. Who's emissions standards must it comply with?

It kind of sounds like you are saying that anyone spending money on their Corvette should spend it at Callaway or not at all.

I like cars to run clean, and that's all I'm going to say. :ugh

Aurora,

While I choose Callaway for this reason, that is not what I am saying at all.

But on a larger scale I say that you are more like to have your investment preserved, have performance, and meet Federal Emissions compliance when choosing Callaway which helps you later at the point of reselling your car.

There may be other shops that might do this to some degree but in a general sense that does not happen with most shops, even popular ones known on many forums.

Preservation of your investment is one of the reasons that people choose Callaway as well as for the products and performance.
