What is this vette?

Gerry, I built it from a D&D bare frame and raw body shell kit in 1995-1996, enjoyed it for a couple of years, got several feature articles in "Vette" and "Kit Car" magazines, and sold it in 1998 to a collector from the east coast. He put it up on eBay this past November and it sold for $73K.

I sent Bob McDorman Chevrolet an email asking if the car was his or borrowing it or what. They replied saying:

Thank you for your inquiry, this vehicle was purchased by Mr. McDorman, and he has added it to his personal collection.

They didn't say whether he purchased it from Harry Yeaggy or if it's a replica or what.

The McDorman car is a very nicely-done replica, but has several significant differences from the real one; I have many photos of the original #001 I took at the Monterey Historics (the day Harry Yeaggy bought it for $4.7 Million), and they are definitely two different cars. I track these five cars very closely (with help from others), and if #001 had been sold again since Harry bought it, we'd know about it.

Alright John, thanks for the info. Like I said, I never knew much about these cars. Glad you do follow closely.

Hi JohnZ,
I just viewed the Amelia Isl. grand sport DVD. It is good but I would have liked more camera time on the cars and also more time spent with the drivers of these cars. John Mecom does indeed make reference "on camera" to a sixth car. Not sure if he was just trying to stir up some fun though.

Best regards,
Gerry

Yes according to my source chassis # 001 and 002, both roadsters, were sold to Penske racing in 1966. Chassis #002 was fitted with a 427 IV engine by Dick Guldstrand, raced for 5 hours by Penske and Dick Thompson before engine trouble retired the car. Penske then sold chassis #001 to George Wintersteen who raced it in several 1966 events but never finished high enough to be in point contention, he sold the car the following year. Roadster chassis #002 was then sold to John Mecom, Jr. After that none of the Grand sports saw professional racing again.

Its' from "Corvette 50th Anniversary" by the auto editors of consumer guide - great book and has alot of full color pictures of all vette years and history of each. And there is no way there is a 6th GS - if someone had they would definately let everyone know!!

I ordered mine from Eckler's. List price is $29.00

Best regards,
Gerry
