What would be more hot temperature wise. An all black Vette with solid color black roof or a black Vette with a transparent roof? I have an all black Vette, and was wondering if I got a transparent roof if it would make the interior more hot.

The transparent roof will be hotter. It allows direct solar radiation into the car along with convection and conduction. The opaque or painted roof eliminates the radiation. Also, there is a litle insualtion underneath which cuts down some of the convection and conduction. I am a mechanical engineer. My 89 has both tops and I plan on testing my theory this summer.. I used the glass top this winter but will change over in the summer.

This makes it hotter for

sure. A blonde about 5'7" 38,22,36, and a recent lottery winner with stock in a brewery.

I agree! I live in Florida and I keep my smoke tinted roof on year around BUT I've tried the painted a few times. The transparent roof is MUCH hotter BUT I like it better for "looks".

I have an "all black" Vette w/ the clear top only (and live in AZ :( ) and my car gets hot as...well you know. Since last summer I had all the windows tinted and I'm ordering one of the sunshade w/ holes for the roof. Hopefully this summer I will be a little better off. Wish I had the solid top but I am pretty tall and I've heard that it reduces the headroom a bit.

My blue tint keeps the car warm in the winter. It will broil you alive in the summer. The solid top has a headliner reducing room by 1 inch. But it seems to be stiffer. And in the hot months a necessity. The red body color is great. You can always pop it out and enjoy the breeze, and the wiggles.

Damn those "wiggles"! :(

I only use my glass top a couple months out of the year, when it is cold outside. the rest of the time the painted top provides far greater heat blockage...

JFNLSA: you may want to buy a painted top... you can get one that matches since your car is black:)

Thank you all folks for your answers. I want to get a transparent roof, and now I know what season it would be best in. :w

Man, I sure do! They saw me comin' when they (Cn'V) sold me a black Vette w/ only the clear (tinted) top and I live in Phx. :( I should have done a bit more research on options before I took the plunge. Any ideas as to where I can get one....CHEAP!

Thx,
Jeff

eBay isn't too bad... there are also a bunch of corvette salvage yards that stock them.

If you decide to buy one, be sure to pick the right one. There are 3 different tops that they had on C4's. The wrong style won't bolt up to your car, as they moved the brackets around. you (obviously) need the 'latest' style top.

Sure: real cheap at MidAmerica Direct--the plastic cling liner, that is!! It really will cut the interior temp by a bunch. I leave it in the C4 throughout July and August to make the heat tolerable.

Another heat related item:

I put 3M window tint on my 'vette a couple of years back.... it was the best heat related thing I did to my car. It has 76% heat blockage. the difference it makes is amazing! Also, with the 3M tint, you don't need to worry about certain cleaners ruining the tint. you can even use ammonia based cleaners, with no fade or color change, and it has a lifetime guarantee.

Well I called Cn'V (where I bought the car) and they are looking into getting me a solid top (they have over 150 Vettes on their lot so I thought...good place to start). The question is...do I want to work a trade or keep my clear one and have both? Which is worth more, the clear or the solid? Living in Phx, I may just want to 86 the clear. What do ya think?

Thanks to you guys and your input, I may be more prepared when it comes time to negotiate. Anyway, I'm waiting for a call back from Cn'V so quick replies would be helpful.:)

Thx,
Jeff

Just had the 3M put on mine as well but I'm still running w/ the clear top so.......

I'm 6'4" and the solid top does reduce the headroom.

greetings,
i live in florida also. i have a bronze tranparent top with a white 88 vette and red interior. when i bought the car, i noticed that i would get a lot of radiated heat coming down from the top roof panel and as a a result, my a/c would have to work harder in the summer months.

so, i purchased a headliner piece from mid america parts. i installed that and still felt heat comming down. so, i went to wallmart and purchased the most inexpensive mattress protector cover (is padded or quilted), cut it to size, and placed between the headliner and roof section. no more radiated heat and the car is a bit more quieter.

i also had my windows tinted rather dark and found a guy who did my hatch glass in 1 single piece. he did a fabulous job for all my windows ($65).

There is a place in PA. that is a salvage yard for Vettes...I have bought several things from them.... www.fparts.com :)
